Q: iPhoto9.6 bombs out when "upgrading" library

I was using Mavericks before upgrading to Yosemite. Upgraded to Yosemite. Downloaded iPhoto9.6 because I had to. iPhoto 9.6 opens, but then tells me that the library has to be upgraded, and it starts, but when the progress bar is about halfway through, it bombs out without an error message of any kind.

I can't recover info from backups to find out what version of iPhoto I was moving to. I don't know if I missed an upgrade (I don't think I did).

Any suggestions?

I should add that my library is on a shared RAID disk. And it bombs out halfway through "Examing Library".

I am having the same problem. I've uninstalled it and tried again and it still won't work. I ran the upgrade tool successfully and when I try to open iPhoto it'll just close itself down.

OK: after my husband's iPhoto9.6 did the same thing we copied the iPhoto Library from the RAID over to his machine locally. Opened iPhoto with Alt-key down to get the menu to re-select the iPhoto Library so we could tell it to upgrade the local one. It *did* upgrade the iPhoto Library. So, evidently doing it over a network was problematic.

Now we're moving the upgraded iPhoto Library to the server to see if we can access it over the network.

You should not have an iPhoto Library on a networked location.

    See this article

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168

    for more. Note the comment:

“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”

The iPhoto library must be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and it must have a hard wired connection - I doubt that the RAID drive is correctly formatted

I am a novice at configuring and upgrading my computer.

My goal is to use iCloud to store photos and video, so I can free up 100 gigs.

I have a Mac-Book 13 inch late 2009.  Just upgraded to Yosemite and upgraded my 2009 iPhoto (version came with mac) to the latest iPhoto.

I, too, get the message that the library needs to be upgraded to work w/ the latest version of iPhoto (also states that the photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto).

The status bar for the library upgrade looks about 95% complete, but then gets hung up.  I then need to force quit.

I have only about 7 gigs available.  Could this be causing the hang up?

I have backed up my older version of iPhoto and pics on a My Passport hard drive.

Any step by step instructions as to how I can fix this?  I am new to this.

    Thanks!

My goal is to use iCloud to store photos and video, so I can free up 100 gigs.

This is not possible with iPhoto, nor will it ever be. The replacement for iPhoto due in 2015 will have this feature as far as we know. So in the short term you'll need to think of other solutions.

I have only about 7 gigs available.  Could this be causing the hang up?

Yes. You're running a disk that is dangerously close to overfull. OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.

Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.

Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.

You need to move your iPhoto Library to an external hard disk:

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

    1. Quit iPhoto

    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.

    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Once done, you can try update it, or trouble shoot the problem if it persists.

Note: this is not a back up. You need a copy on another disk for that.

1 - As s novice the very first thing you need to learn is not to thread jack - for new questions start new threads - do NOT thread jack existing threads about totally different questions

2 - It is not possible to use iCloud to store photos and video - next year when the new photos app is available you will be able to do that to some dehe actual details will not be available until the app is released in 2015

3 - yes the library must be upgraded and no it will not be usable by older version of iPhoto - of course unless you have multiple computers trying to access each other's libraries this make no difference at all to you since you only have the current version of iPhoto - and of course you always backup your iPhoto library prior to upgrading to protect against the rare upgrade problem

4 - you always must have a min of 10 GB of free storage for the system to work - so yes your upgrade problem probably is caused by lack of disk space

5 - check the format of the My Passport drive - if it is not formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) then placing your iPhoto library on it may damage the library

6 -  you need to run your photo library on an external drive that is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) -

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)

And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto

And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Yep. It took forever to move the upgraded iPhoto Library to the server, but it moved, and I can now open it in iPhoto 9.6.

The RAID drive *does* have a hard wired connection, and it *is* formatted Mac OS.

And now I'm going to do my long put-off project of exporting stuff *out* of iPhoto, archiving it on disk, and switching over to another program like Unbound which does not store stuff in proprietary formats where you can't see/access the individual files.

But it's still a *networked location* so you risk *poor performance* or *dataloss* iPhoto does not use any proprietary formats at all, and of course you can use a Referenced Library. It's hard to compare a simple viewer with iPhoto but if OS integration and non-destructive editing are important to you then you might want to consider a more powerful app than Unbound.

Glad you got it to work. It won't work for me no matter what I do. I've tried things suggested in other help topics and it still crashes out on me when trying to update the library.

Same problem here. I did not have any choice but to update to this POS 9.6 and now I lost access to my library located on an external HD. Now I managed to import all 35,000 photos and videos to iPhoto. It's undergoing now and I bet you the events will be gone.

I am fuming at the mouth right and using all my determination not to curse at Apple to which I spend thousands of dollar to not have this kind of BS.
