Q: Pages 5.5 Spell check

Why doesn't the spell check in Pages 5.5 work at all?  Anyone else having this problem?

THIS IS THE FIX.  Thanks VikingOSX.

Like many Pages users I do not want Spelling Check on while I type, but appreciate its help in checking my spellilng after my first drafts.

Spelling check in Pages v5.5.1 (Yosemite 10.10.1) will work when you enable/perform the following in order:

    • Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Spelling When Typing
    • Edit > Spelling and Grammar (Either of the following)
      • Show Spelling and Grammar
      • Check Document Now

Using the above, you will get the familiar red-dotted underline for misspellings (unless Apple disabled this in the German version ). In no defense of Apple, the spell checker in Pages v5.5.1 is dumber than a box of rocks, and a more competent, third-party, spell checker is certainly indicated.

Grammarian Pro has a 7-day trial. There is extensive, downloadable dictionary support (including German). It can check while you write, or afterwards. It is not a Pages plug-in. I receive no compensation of any kind for this product suggestion.

That was - of course - what I tried. But it doesn´t help...

Mine is on, and pretends to spellcheck... but it seems to function more like an editor. By that, I mean it decides that words that are spelled perfectly fine are not the best. For example:

"By this point, many of us had decided it was best to sleep fully clothed."

    was changed to:

"By this point, many of us has decided it wasn't best to sleep fully clothes."

So many words are changed and it's like one of their call center people were writing the code for it. I want to use pages, I like the integration with the cloud. I just want to be the one doing the writing. I feel that if I'm not careful, I may end having to credit their software people as editors.

I have followed this thread and tried everything and still cannot get the spellchecker to work in Pages.  Whatever language settings I use and whether check grammar is checked or not.  Punch the next button and it just sits there and does nothing.  Frustrating.

Just a thought:  I use a smart phone but write almost exclusively at a PC.  May I suggest further that PC's are primarily used for writing. I get the impression that there are millions of bloating lines of iOS code in Pages, etc. that relate to the operation of a smart phone or iPad     Philosophically, my impression is that Apple has tried too hard to control our writing and formatting (perhaps useful for text messaging on an iPhone) while ignoring the primary goal of facilitating  the writer to easily and creatively control the computer's power.  i'm curious to hear what others think.

I am having the same problem with spell check.  I am an English teacher and project daily sentences on my smart board to be edited and revised.  Often the sentences intentionally have spelling errors.  I don't want the squiggly lines to point this out, and I don't want  auto correct to correct the spelling errors.  I tried the solutions suggested above and they work, but it sure take a lot more steps.  Any more solutions out there?

Actually a reply to all, not just to the OP.

Unless Apple has removed it in current versions, you should find a "Provide 'Application' Feedback" item in the Application menu of all or most Apple applications. The Application menu is the one labelled with the name of the application (eg. Pages), and found at the left end of the menu bar.

Describe the problem and the way you want to be able to use spell check. Be factual, be complete, but avoid being confrontational. Feedback messages are read by Apple, and the important ones are directed to the development teams.

Don't expect a reply (the feedback form will tell you that), or an immediate fix.

    Regards,

    Barry

    Hi Teacher,

    Pages 5.5.3

    Some nonsense Latin (Lorem ipsum)

Menu > Edit > Spelling And Grammar > Check Spelling While Typing

Annoying, if that it what I meant to type.

Turn off 'Check Spelling While Typing' until you have finished.

Then turn it back on and right click (or control click) on a word with a red underline. You will see suggestions, but if it is a word you know is correct, choose Learn Spelling.

It won't show as a spelling mistake in the future.

    Regards,

    Ian.
