I have the same problem. Looks like Samsung has not yet updated the Kies software to run in Yosemite. Might have to uninstall it and use the Android File Transfer instead.
Hey there,
had the same problem as well,
just uninstall and reinstall samsung kies and it should work fine. I did this on my MBP with Yosemite and it worked fine
hope it works out for you and good luck!
Thanks Audio Guy, solution worked exactly as you suggest.
I tried Samsung chat support directly and they had no idea...said they would notify me when it was supported. So confirming if you uninstall and download a fresh version of Kies from Samsung site directly, installs fine and works like a new one!
Thanks again...

Hi, I'm having so much trouble uninstalling the kies. I have researched so much and watched so much videos! After i click on the uninstall icon, It ask me do i want to remove it so i click on yes. But then it send me an Alert saying " Please remove the device from the PC and press the [remove] button again." When i click on the remove button the whole thing just pops up again and again. I think this is my 5th time trying to uninstall kies and it is extremely frustrating! You seen like you know your stuff so do you have and idea of how i can fix this? Thank you!!
Thanks. I just tried uninstalling and reinstalling Kies twice, and although the program launches, I get a message that it only supports the upgrade feature of Kies, then tells me that I have the latest firmware. I don't even get a screen giving me the option to back up my phone. I can go to the tools menu and try to update my firmware, but then again, it tells me I have the latest firmware. I can't do anything else. I'm running a 2013 iMac FYI. It's interesting that you can run Kies on your MBP. Can you also back up and restore your phone?

HiTwee,
I think from memory all I did was open the Applications folder and drag the Kies application straight to the Trash bin.
From there I went to the Samsung website and downloaded a 'fresh' version of Kies for Mac OSX and went through the install process again fully. After that, I was able to connect my Note3, it read it straight away, I did a full back up and can use it as planned originally (I think).
What I have noted is that if Kies tells you that there is a firmware update, trying to update from the Kies application through the USB connection to the device is fraught with unreliability and the phone connects/disconnects constantly. I doubt they have sufficient resilience in this upgrade feature. To counter that, I simply let the device upgrade over a WiFi connection and because I had stopped automatic software upgrades, I had to enable that app on the phone again from the Application Manager (long press on the app will then enable this).
Because I was so far behind (still on Jelly Bean at the time) it took a few goes to get not only the OS but the firmware updates installed but now all good and able to be used on either of my Mac machines (iMac desktop or MB Air).
Hope this helps!

SAMSUNG KIES WORKS QUITE WELL WITH YOSEMITE.. FOR THOSE IN AFRICA, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS UNINSTALL THE ONE PRESENTLY ON YOUR SYSTEM AND INSTALL FROM THIS LINK: Kies | Samsung AFRICA_EN
GUESS THAT IS THE LINK MEANT FOR THOSE IN AFRICA.. SO IF YOU ARE NOT IN AFRICA YOU MIGHT HAVE TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT
johngulu thanks a lot, I have not been able to use Kies ever since I upgraded to yosemite, after I read all the above tips from everyone, I uninstalled from the installation folder and then downloaded the Kies for Africa as I stay in Nigeria, and now everything is back to normal.
Today I downloaded a new version of Kies, 3.1.0.15042_6, and it seemed to work fine. I was able to backup my Note 3 running Lollipop with no hesitation. Files transferred to my Mac running Yosemite, OS X 10.10.3, easily. The download is available at http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
If anyone is still interested in this discussion, I recently downloaded the new version of Kies, 3.1.0.15073_10. It seemed to be able to connect to my Galaxy Note 3 quickly and I transferred photos easily. However, when I tried to backup my phone to my iMac running OS X 10.10.5, Kies seemed to work well until it got to the Internal Memory of the phone, Miscellaneous content files. It hung there and I had to forcibly disconnect my phone to get out of the backup mode.
I went back to version 3.1.0.15042_6 and the backup worked fine.
