Q: iPad air 2 pop noise

My iPad Air 2 randomly has a "Pop Noise" out of the speaker. it happens randomly about once or twice a day when touching the screen or pressing a button. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Could it be a software issue or has it more likely to do with the hardware?

iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 8.1

Turned off lock sounds and keyboard clicks haven't had a pop since. Has been about 2 months of daily use.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try this and report back here with my results.

I've been able to replicate the pop by moving the 'ringer and alerts' slider up and down. It's not to the point of being annoying and the iPad is perfect otherwise. I'm not so keen on a replacement that could possibly have other issues and especially if it pops again.

I'm hoping this is some kind of driver issue that Apple can address in a future update. If not, I still have a year to replace.

UPDATE - So I went back to Apple and they kindly replaced my iPad.

Random "pop" problem is still there. So that's two in a row now. I have a couple more days before my 2 weeks is up so unfortunately, I'm going to have to take it back in a couple of days and get a refund. It's so sad because pop issue aside, this is by far the best iPad I've ever used. But I just can't deal with this kind of defect. It didn't happen with my first iPad Air 2. Just my second and third. I'm afraid if I get a fourth I'll have the same problem.

Hopefully Apple can build a batch that fixes this issue.

Folks, if you're in the 2-week return period, and your iPad pops, do yourself a favor and return it for a refund, unless you can live with the pop.  It's highly likely they all do it, and once Apple has your money, short of a class-action suite, you're not going to see a remedy.  Here's an example-- in 2011 I bought the 15* MBP and it had a memory failure within the first week (the dreaded 3-beeps at start, no boot).  Spooked about a failure so soon, I returned it for a refund, luckily, because there was a design fault in the mother-board that led to many failures-- and not until 2014 did Apple issue a recall, and that was after a class-action law suite.  So my rule is, if there's a widely reported, persistent fault, pass on the device, and come back next year,  I've done this on 4 different Mac products-- the 2011 MBP, the 2012 MacMini (HDMI snowy screen video issue), the 2013 iPad Air 1 (low memory, multiple-tab refresh issue), and now this 2014 iPad Air2.  In the meantime, I bought a $140 Dragon 10" Android tablet, and will revisit the Air 3.  Good luck.

Not all the Air 2s pop.  I returned my popping unit in December and bought a new one the same day.  My new one does not pop, even if I try to make it pop by doing the things that seem to prompt the pop that people have listed in this thread.  If it had popped, I would have had another 2 weeks to return it.  Others in this thread have reported that their new Air 2s didn't pop.  My new iPad has run flawlessly since December.

My iPad Air 2 has never popped either and I got mine in December.  So not all Air 2's pop.

64GB WiFi Space Gray bought in early December, and does not pop. If I had one that did, and replacements did as well, I'd definitely wait until the Air 3, and maybe bag the thing all together depending on how the Air 3 looked. Sounds like Apple has tested your loyalty pretty well, cavol!

I wonder how this whole Pop-Gate will affect Apple's always stellar Customer Satisfaction survey results. They always seem to score very high, and I know this is just the Squeaky Wheel end of one product of many they make, but just wondered...

    Well,

if your one doesn't pop up its only a matter of time to start poppin, but what is so big problem if doesn't do it every time you touch the display that's means you are just ok, if pops up all the time just go to apple store and change it. If you are not happy with it and can not return for refund just sell it on eBay and buy another brand or wait for the next gen iPad. If you have found a solution to fix this please share with us and have a good Time.

    All the best.

You have no idea whether anyone's iPad will pop in the future and your "prediction" is absolutely baseless.

rbrylawski do do live where your weather is warm? I live in Iowa and it seems it pops more when it's cold due to more static. It's warming up here and hasn't pop in over a week till I vacationed in South Dakota where it's colder at night.

Guilty as charged.  I live in Tampa, FL.  BUT, I also took my iPad up north not too long ago and it was very cold and still my iPad didn't pop.

I bought a second iPad Air 2 identical to the one I got back in January (wifi, 128gb, Space Grey) only this one was made in week 38 September unlike my original week 50. After about 20 days of trouble free use it started popping like crazy! It pops every single time I call up the keyboard! to make things worse the speakers also produce very noticeable vibrations which is an issue I did not have with my previous unit...

So how common is this problem exactly? The 2 units I've owned so far were purchased from different stores, different countries even and were made months apart...

Also the Air 2 my mate got back in January which supposedly was pop free, now pops too!

I Don't understand why apple has remained so tight lipped about this. Unacceptable!!!

its more then obvious that all iPads Air 2 has this issue,  some are worse then the others but no exception, soon or late will pop. If it's too bad then Apple will change it for you, if it's not so bad just keep it and enjoy the rest of its beauty. And if your one never pops why are you here in this forum. The pops are annoying but I still love my iPad Air 2 and will not return or change it, until breaks or performance is affected. By the way no pops for a week now, settings EQ on bass booster.

You are making a blanket statement that is baseless and untrue.   It is NOT obvious all iPad Air 2's have this problem, nor do you know this to be fact.  And as to why someone like me who does have a popping Air 2 is here, it's simple:

    1. Because I can be here

    2. Because I'm a frequent helper in both iPad and iPhone forums

    3. To offer balance to someone checking in that not ALL iPad Air 2's pop

Toninog3, what is obvious is that you are making baseless, speculative comments on this forum. I am here because I posted when my original Air 2 had the popping problem.  My new one has not popped since I got it in December.  While I can't say for sure that it will not pop in the future, you don't have any legitimate reason to say it will.
