Q: iPad air 2 pop noise

My iPad Air 2 randomly has a "Pop Noise" out of the speaker. it happens randomly about once or twice a day when touching the screen or pressing a button. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Could it be a software issue or has it more likely to do with the hardware?

    I returned two because of this problem then finally got a refund (3 total). All of them week 44 of production. I hope all the people that are stuck with this issue get help. If you are looking to buy one and you are here to investigate well, it is not a hospital, it is a bunch of people that love Apple and there device pops or has static discharge problems that Apple has denied. Hardware or software it is real it is a problem and it is being ignored. The hope that I see is all the views this one thread is getting. Watch out for Apple's Sentinel.

    My bad on suggesting posting anything that may be personally identifiable ;-). Is there a way to tell production week from serial # printed on the box? I have an unopened iPad 2 that's a Christmas present and want to see if it's a newer production run (and hopefully problem free).

     

    This kinda ***** that we should have to hold our breath hoping that a brand new, $600 Premium product that's been in production for a couple months is not defective :-(

    This popping noise thingy can be found in devices manufactured in the early production weeks and in recent devices. Hard to believe nobody found the source of the problem in the manufacturing process while making millions of devices in all those weeks.

    But what kind of helpful information will the production week provide? There's no official statement about a hardware issue, no informations about affected devices in relation to serial number or production week.

    I was thinking that all Ipad Air 2s were defective, people exchanging were getting ipads that were as defective, me included, but on my third exchage I got one that after 25 days hasn't popped - yet (and I stres tested it by doing all the things that would make my previous two pop easily).

    My first one was week 39, second was week 44 and also the third (good) is week 44, and I read of some with week 49 popping, so more than production week must be a defective production line that made the popping ipads.

    We could pretend to be you and mess up your claim with Apple And a dozen other malicious things. Software registration could be messed up.

     

    most of us don't think of malicious behavior but would you post your credit card number? Or your car VIN that it linked to your license?

    IDenity could be discovered too. Faux iPads. gwrx is on top of things. Thank you Gwrx. I really do not believe the week of production really means anything Because  Some people have the same week as mine and report no problems where mine had problems. But it is a good start to trying to figure this thing out.

    Frankly I think it is hit and miss and some were impacted and others nothing. For all we know it is a handful of Foxxcon employees not following procedure.

    I'm thinking the production week really doesn't matter as the reported spread of the issue is so broad. It would just be nice to know that Apple acknowledge it and are working on it. I'm sure most of us would be prepared to hang in with our units and await the solution rather than get into the apparent  "hit or miss" cycle of replacements.

    With regard to serial numbers what (if any) is the relevance/difference of those beginning with DL vs DM?

    Another thread on the Air 2 fingertip screen ghosting issue mentioned the DL serial #s seemed to have more problems than the DMs, but that's just anecdotal so nothing for certain.

    Production week really doesn't show any trend.  I'm week 42.  I have no popping noises on my Air and haven't since I got it.  There may be people who have the same production week who do.

    40,000+  Views of this 'one' thread. Do you think just one of them is an Apple engineer. It is kind of hard for Apple to deny this now or, state "I have never heard of that being a problem before."

    It's typical for companies to do this - deny, deny, deny ;-). I have a fairly new Samsung Convoy 3 flip phone (yes, I have a flip phone!), and the texting font size is miserably small. I would bet a simple firmware update could fix it, but they don't want to invest company time for a firmware update on a low margin product.  Many people on the forums I've read complains about it, but when I contact Verizon or Samsung, they act as if no one except me is having the problem.

     

    A few years ago, 1st generation Toyota Tundras had a defect in frame rust-proofing. I was thinking of buying one until I read extensive threads on Toyota forums about the problem. Almost everyone posting about the issue on Tundra Solutions said when they took their truck in to Toyota, they acted like their case of a frame rusting through was the first they'd ever seen. Eventually, Toyota couldn't hold back the avalanche of people with trucks that had rusted through frames and issued a recall, replacing complete truck frames at huge expense to them.

     

    I don't think we're talking something as serious here, but it shows what companies can try to do in the face of a large amount of customer feedback, though like it's been said, it's hard to know the true percentage of Air 2s sold that have the problems because there are a lot of happy customers out there that aren't going to post anything.

     

    I'm sure Apple has been down this road before and is working on something in secret, so to not spook potential new customers (like myself). If they were to officially admit these issues with Air 2 and word went out, the new customers would wait for a definite advertised fix, or just wait for the iPad Air 3, especially since a lot of folks think the Air 2 might not be worth the upgrade from the original Air.
