Q: iPad air 2 pop noise

My iPad Air 2 randomly has a "Pop Noise" out of the speaker. it happens randomly about once or twice a day when touching the screen or pressing a button. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Could it be a software issue or has it more likely to do with the hardware?

iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 8.1

Well I changed my mind and the pop/crack iPad air 2 has been returned. Apple would

not admit to this being a problem. They said it could be caused by being near a microwave.

Apple tech suggested we are all complaining over every little problem. And

because they could not duplicate the problem I shouldn't expect another replacement.

Wow what a change in attitude from Apple.

Yes, it is just sad, the same i was told last Friday none of the Apple engineers are aware of this issue, had to send a video.

Being near a microwave? really, wow such an inventive people.

Yes i have bee suggested the same when i sent the first video i found on youtube: the use is "playing" with the device. You know the word playing suggenting a kid behaviour.

If they don't do something for me they gonna receive a little middle finger as a present at the end of this year....

I'm more inclined to return for refund (which is an option I have) as others have posted trying 3 different units in Apple Store swaps with no success.  I can wait until mid-2015 production.........

Personally i wouldn't wait for a half year old device.... you could wait for ipad air 3 but i CAN ASSURE it's gonna be worst than 2.

Nothing  at all wrong with the iPad 2 Air once you get one that doesn't snap crackle dor'pop'.  Great improvement over my iPad 3.

I agree.  I'm really enjoying my non-popping Air 2 since exchaning my popping model.  I wondered how much I would still use it now that I got a 6 plus, but I'm using iPad more than ever.  The significant reduction in thickness and weight makes the Air 2 much more friendly to use than my iPad 3.

After having 2 air 2 iPads pop and exchanging them I have been good with the 3 exchange for almost 2 months until yesterday when I opened safari browser search bar and I got the pop.. I give up.

and that's exactly one of the problems (among others), you can't just get a good one only by wishing it  you know....

And do you think that only depends on me?

For the other issues read the whole thread.

But I have read the whole thread, and most everything else on the Internet on the electrostatic cracking...if it was software every iPad would have the issues. But as they dont that just leaves hardware. Only my humble view but the harder we look the we can find fault in all but one.

    ***** UPDATE *****

After feeling really fed up with my pop noise (as well as sideways keyboard on spotlight search and iTunes password dialog box being off screen making buying apps tough) and seeing so many disgruntled users on here and on Mac Rumors forum, I decided to collect all the evidence including my YouTube video that I posted a while ago and do the following..........

    I WROTE TO TIM COOK.

I know that sounds extreme but I felt so irritated by the lack of admission of a fault! I mean, clearly a percentage of iPad Air 2 units are defective and I just want Apple to accept it and stop treating us like fools with rudimentary "fixes" like resetting or restoring!

Anyway, I was very polite and explained my issue as well as providing evidence of all you guys' issues. And no, Mr. Cook did not reply but a representative from "Apple Executive Relations EMEIA" called me the very next day. The representative couldn't have been nicer and scheduled a call from a senior Apple technician. It was so bizarre hearing that I was being called in response to my email to Tim Cook!

The senior technician called me and asked me to confirm a diagnostic test so he could see my iPad's details. After a 10 minute friendly chat, we got somewhere. He confirmed it is hardware and that the problem is known to occur in some early production units. Mine was week 41 and my iPad was manufactured on October 11 2014.

Next, I received a call from the executive relations agent who booked me in to the Apple Store on Regent Street in London, which is my local one.

I went in, explained everything, the genius read through all my notes as I have a case reference number with all the details and he chuckled when he said out loud this started with a letter to Tim Cook. We talked about the issue of popping noises and guess what...?! He'd never heard of the issue...! Sound familiar? Well, I continued with all the evidence, my discussions with the senior technician and my YouTube video as well as a live demo since I could replicate it. I loaded this discussion thread too. And again.... progress! Apparently two managers at the Regent Street store know of this issue. I don't think I'm supposed to know that or tell you all but the whole point of me writing this is to help you.

There was only one new gold 64GB Air 2 in stock. Since I had confirmed it is a manufacturing date issue, the genius was kind enough to check the date of production on the replacement and......... October 18th 2014, week 42. My heart sank. The only unit in stock and it's one of the first run units. Well I took it hoping for the best and when I got home...... it popped about 10 seconds after the restore from backup completed and has done so several times.

The executive rang me today and I explained I'd like another replacement of a newer production unit so I’m going to get a call when they come in. It might be as soon as this weekend or as long as mid-February.

Well, that's my story so far. I feel I have made progress, confirmed it's hardware, confirmed it's affecting some early units only, found out that Apple is aware, store managers are aware and that if you have this issue, you MUST MUST report it to them and get a replacement! It'll result in them taking notice and producing improved devices.

Hope this has helped and inspired anyone with a faulty unit to try for a newer replacement unit. I'm looking forward to getting my second replacement and I'm told Apple will keep replacing them until I'm happy! Wonderful service from everyone I have dealt with and I’m really pleased.

Well here's a troll anyway. ;-)  It would have been polite and gracious of you to include Tims contact information. If we all wrote him then perhaps we could get some traction for those of us past being able to return it. :-)

Like I said, Google. And before you talk about politeness, why don't you actually try Google like I suggested before attention seeking?

And the forum moderators would have removed his email address as fast as you can say pop...........You did the right thing.  You suggested how someone can communicate without violating any forum rules.  Good for you!
