Q: iPad air 2 pop noise

My iPad Air 2 randomly has a "Pop Noise" out of the speaker. it happens randomly about once or twice a day when touching the screen or pressing a button. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Could it be a software issue or has it more likely to do with the hardware?

    Hi all,

Just an update to say that I returned my iPad Air 2 like I said I would. Didn't have any issues returning it to the high street store; they actually appreciated that I took it up with Apple first and had the case ID if needed.

They offered me a full refund or a replacement. I took the refund. I, like others, eagerly wait for iOS 8.1.3 and hope the log notes say 'Fixes issue with iPad Air 2 where device may emit a popping sound in certain circumstances' -> Until then I doubt I'll purchase the device. I hope it's a software issue because it's a great device -> However, I have to take what the Apple support told me, that it's a hardware issue and that makes me reluctant to buy another one.

    Good luck everyone

I think returning your device was a wise decision.

There's just too much confusion at the moment. Some Apple support employees believe it's software, others believe it's hardware and some never heard of it allegedly.

Time will tell who was right.

Can you decern yourself to be wise?

    Day 1.

The AppleCare Repair Center has received your device.  The device has been restored via iTunes and has also passed through our thorough functional hardware testing with no issues.  Apple has heard reports of the issue you were experiencing and it is currently under review.  Our Engineering team is working towards a solution for this software issue, but it is impossible to predict when any investigation will be complete.  Though, since the device is at our facility, I will have the technicians ensure that the device hardware is functional.

If you continue to experience this issue, or any other issue with the device, please contact our AppleCare Tech Support: (800) APL-CARE (800-275-2273) and ask to speak with a Senior Advisor.

    Day 2.

We are doing our best to identify and reproduce the failure. I apologize for the hold on your iPad but we just like to make sure we have tested thoroughly for the issue.  We generally only hold devices for 24 hours so you should be receiving an iPad back soon!

As for the source of the issue, our engineering team has identified the source of the issue to be software related. For this particular issue, we will likely need to wait for an update to fully resolve the issue. However, we will continue to inspect for any hardware issues.

We are dedicated to getting back a device to you that works.

Thanks for being an Apple customer!

    Day 3.

The technicians couldn't reproduce the symptom you mentioned when you requested service. They confirmed that your product meets our specifications for performance, usability, and functionality. They also installed the latest software and firmware, if necessary.

all they did was reinstall the software lol  sigh...   good thing it only took them like 4 days to reinstall the software via iTunes. =}  lol

Anyways... I received the device and it still makes the same popping sound, The good news is I just sold it on ebay.  Have a good day.

I've exchanged 5 or 6 Air 2's now for various reasons.  All of them had the issue with popping.  After shutting off keyboard clicks and lock sounds, I haven't been able to reproduce the popping.  I also muted ringer and alerts and turned that option off.  Not sure which of the three seems to be dealing with what seems like it could be a software issue.  Just wanted to post and see if this helps maintain the issue until an actual fix arrives.  I'd like to hear from others that try this, to verify it's not just a fluke.

I can confirm this. So far, I wasn't able to reproduce the issue since I turned off keyboard clicks last week. Lock sounds seem to have no influence. I'm not really convinced at the moment because that would mean it is a software issue and I doubt that everybody who never experienced the popping noise doesn't use keyboard clicks.

Btw. iOS 8.1.3 is available - no hint about our special problem in the release notes. Let's see...

    iOS 8.1.3 has just released!

And we'll see if it changed something about this

Has anyone noticed other improvements so far?

I got my first pop under iOS 8.1.3 when pressing the home button to unlock my iPad.

So much for it being fixed by software.

But Apple have never acknowledge there is an issue or said they would fix it.  After all they only made $18bn profile last quarter give them a break !

They said they were working on it, they did not say it would be in 8.1.3 as a fix, it wasn't in the release notes either so why assume a small point release would sort this out? I would wait for further betas of 8.2 to see what happens.

They can't solve this issue with a software update.

It's hardware and you have to live with your bugged iPad.

    I'm sorry for you.

    Bye

They've never said they are working on it either.  In fact they haven't even acknowledged there's a problem.  When I called in about two weeks ago, they said I was the first person to report the problem.

Dear Apple and iPad Air 2 purchasers

My iPad Air 2 device is NOT functioning as designed/normally, I don’t believe the popping
problem was deliberately designed into the devise, thus it is NOT operating
normally or as designed. Replication or witnessing of the popping/problem should not be an issue due, to the number
of people with units exhibiting this issue (although a technician my need to
speed some time using the unit to witness the issue), a lot of which have been
    returned for evaluation.

    The sounds as
described by many are that of…

    Clipping

    Loud speaker pop

    Static discharge or arcing

ANY and ALL of these are significant indicators of serious problems that have a very high
probability of damaging the device, leading to a total failure of some
components or the total failure of the device itself. Rendering it not usable
for the purpose one designs, sells or purchases such a device.

Apple needs to acknowledge these issues as significant, stop denying problems, identify the
problem, contain the defective devices, effect corrective actions (repair or
replacement) and initiate preventative action to prevent future shipments of
    devices with these issues.

As long as Apple cannot or will not identify and/or acknowledge the problem, we as
consumers have NO REASONABLE expectation that the devices we purchased will
continue function as designed and intended. If they don’t know why it is doing
what it is doing, how can they claim it is not an issue? We who have spent top
dollar for these high end devices are not getting the quality we paid for.

As a professional, I don’t judge a company solely on if their products have issues,
but I mainly judge a company on their reactions and actions when these issues
    develop.

Same here... Hope it will be fixed in iOS 8.2. (in March/April i think)

My iPad only does it once, when I restart it and type in the first number of my passcode...

After that the whole sound of the iPad doesn't work until I restart it 3-5 times.

But then it works fine again

    So it's a software bug.
