Q: iPad air 2 pop noise

My iPad Air 2 randomly has a "Pop Noise" out of the speaker. it happens randomly about once or twice a day when touching the screen or pressing a button. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Could it be a software issue or has it more likely to do with the hardware?

iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 8.1

I Also have come to the conclusion that you can't fix the Air 2 and a replacement just gives you another Snap Crackle Pop.

A replacement iPad fixed the problem for me. No more pop.

A Friend at work has the 64gb air 2 and theirs does not exhibit the issue. I tried really hard to reproduce it but nothing. Also the 6 Air 2s at the Apple Store Didn't have it either.

I Suspect the sound chips inside our iPops were part of an undetected faulty batch that was evenly spread across the production line.

Space Gray WiFi 64GB Air 2 with no pops. It's the first iPad I've ever owned, bought at Costco, week 44 build, if I remember correctly.

YOu might be correct. I had a week 44 Space Grey 64GB model that had no pops for a month, but I returned it for a week 48 128Gb Space Grey that has pops.

BOth were from best buy. (Can't beat the $100 Black Friday deals!)

Do you remember the bug with the strange sound when closing SmartCover (Case)

Exactly this happend to me right now after restarting the iPad because I had to charge it.

    So it's clear - It's Software !

Because apple did fix this with an earlier version of iOS, but now it appears again, and significant more often by some people

I think, just wait for iOS 8.2 or even 8.1.4

My IPad air 2 just popped loudly when touching the screen. I was putting in the first number of my passcode after opening the Smart Cover. Battery is at 100 percent.

A full refund seems to be the best "fix" for this issue

    UPDATE

Apple sent me a replacement unit which I declined to accept as it was REFURBISHED... If I wanted a used iPad I would have bought a used iPad!

With no solution in sight I ve decided to sell my iPad on eBay and be done with it! I know that i'll lose a bit of money but at least I have learned my lesson.

Good luck everyone and I trully wish that this problem is somehow fixed/patched or that you all get new replacements!

I'd do the same but i don't find that honest unless....they new buyer is aware of the issue and doesn't care.

    Day 1.

The AppleCare Repair Center has received your device.  The device has been restored via iTunes and has also passed through our thorough functional hardware testing with no issues.  Apple has heard reports of the issue you were experiencing and it is currently under review.  Our Engineering team is working towards a solution for this software issue, but it is impossible to predict when any investigation will be complete.  Though, since the device is at our facility, I will have the technicians ensure that the device hardware is functional.

If you continue to experience this issue, or any other issue with the device, please contact our AppleCare Tech Support: (800) APL-CARE (800-275-2273) and ask to speak with a Senior Advisor.

    Day 2.

We are doing our best to identify and reproduce the failure. I apologize for the hold on your iPad but we just like to make sure we have tested thoroughly for the issue.  We generally only hold devices for 24 hours so you should be receiving an iPad back soon!

As for the source of the issue, our engineering team has identified the source of the issue to be software related. For this particular issue, we will likely need to wait for an update to fully resolve the issue. However, we will continue to inspect for any hardware issues.

We are dedicated to getting back a device to you that works.

Thanks for being an Apple customer!

    Day 3.

The technicians couldn't reproduce the symptom you mentioned when you requested service. They confirmed that your product meets our specifications for performance, usability, and functionality. They also installed the latest software and firmware, if necessary.

all they did was reinstall the software lol  sigh...   good thing it only took them like 4 days to reinstall the software via iTunes. =}  lol

Anyways... I received the device and it still makes the same popping sound, The good news is I just sold it on ebay.  Have a good day.

That's exactly what i saw coming from Apple Mexico...a completely waste of time.

I Had the same static pop sound from my first IPad Air 2 after trying all methods on these threads with no luck I made an appointment at the Genius Bar. When I told them about the problem they said we have never heard of that happening the he excused himself went to a co worker and came right back and said we are going to give you a new iPad. I told him I was past my 14 day return limit and he said no problem at all. In less than 5 minutes I walked out with a brand new iPad air2 . I have not had any problems with the new one after 2 weeks since getting it.

SAme popping noise with my iPad air 2 tried all methods in threads and still continued. Took it to the Genius Bar and they said they never heard of this problem and then he excused himself to talk to a coworker. He came back and said we are going to give you a new one even though you are past the 14 day limit. In less than 5 minutes I walked out with a new iPad. In 2 weeks of use I report no problem with new one.

Three units, including a refurb, all popped. There is no way this is not affecting all of them. I know computers are always funky with sound, all my devices do something out of the ordinary once in a while, but this was something I could not live with including the constant pops from headphones. I use this as a web browsing, music playing, media consuming machine. Audio quality is important and Apple wont get my money until I know this is resolved.

The easiest and fastest way I found to test a new iPop is to have it charged to 100% and swipe down on the home screen for Spotlight Search repeatedly. It will pop through the headphones every time you do it and occasionally pop the external speakers.

I tried your test method.  Thankfully, my replacement Air 2 still doesn't pop, with or without headphones.

I Think I am going to wait for 8.2 or the end of March, whichever comes first.  If the issue isn't resolved, I'll bring my iPad in for service.  I think a month after purchase is too late to return to best buy.
