Q: iPad air 2 pop noise

My iPad Air 2 randomly has a "Pop Noise" out of the speaker. it happens randomly about once or twice a day when touching the screen or pressing a button. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Could it be a software issue or has it more likely to do with the hardware?

iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 8.1

Did you take a replacement and if so did this solve your problem or are you still hearing static/crackling sounds?

    Solution:

    1. Backup your iPad, because we do not want you lose anything.
    2. View this link https://www.apple.com/retail/ to find the nearest apple store and set up a genius bar appointment.  In the note section, explain the current issue.
    3. Get to your appointment 10-15 mins early.  They will most likely swap out iPad with no issue as long there no physical damage.  Cheers!

    Bedford,

sorry to get to the table so late regarding this issue but you mention that it is happening on a wide range of iDevices? I am curious to know exactly why you think that, what iDevices are you refering to, and when did this start to happen for you? For example my first three the clicking noise happened out of the box during set up. Those i returned for a refund. Bought another iPad Air 2 in early January and it made a loud popping sound took it in and it was a hardware and software issue and they gave me an exchange and that one is doing just fine.

Then i bought one through my cell carrier and it made a quite clicking noise out of the box just as the first two I bought. I called the carrier and they said it was both software and hardware. In basic terms, so I could understand what they meant was happening with the iPad Air 2 was the software that controls the Ram and processors 'was' not working as it should causeing a subltle crackling sound. They went on to explain additional issues with the software problems plaguing the devices and then taughted about a near patch that may fix some to most iPad Air 2's.

In addition, there are a good many that have a totaly different problem that is similar. It is when the iPad makes a louder popping noise. That is speaker, processessor, RAM, and software. In some cases it may be fixed with a software patch and others would be to exchange the unit with the reconfigured units that have been rolling off the line as late as week 52. Does not mean if you have a week 52 you will not have issues. As i stated earlier there are a lot of software issues still to be fixed. It means that Apple has Hopefully solved the hardware issue.

He also explained that there are so many issues with iOS 8 Apple was working on iOS 9 to fix the issues. The closest release maybe 8.3 that is scheduled to come out right before the Apple Watch release date. That update may also have more patches for the WiFi issue and the noise issue. This last update was to remedy a list of issues including the WiFi issue and the popping problem but it was not as successful as Apple had hoped. So as they work on a package for the Watch and the remaining problems there is hint that Apple may just put off all these popping issues and WiFi problems until iOS 9. In doing so they are still able to get their watch out into the market and then work to solve this (or these) issue(s).

The last update did solve my close friend's crackling iPad Air 2 but i read in here that some are still having the problem. So I am very interested as to when you first noticed the problem and why you say it is happening on all iDevices?

None of my Macs or any of my six iPhone 6's, two iPhone 5s's, and iPods make those noises. In addition our new iPad Air 2's are not doing it either. My concern is that this may be an issue that may occure further down the road with my devices. I can't have employee's phones in the shop.

Apple is still keeping this issue close to the vest but that is the Apple way. When I talk with my cell provider they are more open regarding issues. One last thing so far the softer cracking noise has not proven to have any physical impact on the preformance of the devices so far that maybe y Apple is not jumping to respond to it. As for the delay in the WiFi responding is a very physically noticable issue so Apple has mentioned it in addition to the added memory when updating.

One final note, the speakers do not shut off unless the device is turned off, or it is in sleep mode (mute does not turn the speakers off). I mention that because there are a few threads that mention that the speakers only are on when they are needed as a form of power saving mode but they are always on if the device is awake. So that is not the problem.

Wow, that was quite interesting to read. Thank you very much!

I like the part "That is speaker, processessor, RAM, and Software" - meaning, everything we put together just doesn't work.

Well, perhaps there's hope if they're able to update the microcode in a future patch.

Btw. I'm able to confirm your last info about the speakers since yesterday. For the first time my magical iPop made a loud pop when the keyboard came up while I was playing music in the background.  So, the speakers were already in use before the pop occurred. I was pretty sure they would shut off the speakers when not in use but my yesterday's experience shows you're right.

Just to make emphasis in one word: likely = probably.

That simply means that yes some customers are gonna get a new iPad as a replacement, others a refurbished one and others are gonna get nothing, all from the same company with the same issue.

My ipad pop again today after a few days of not doing it (thought last firmware finally solved the issue at least for me) but i was wrong, i also have noticed a pattern: it pops when battery goes from 90% to 89%, my logic says the culprit maybe the battery...

Also i have noticed that most of the people reporting the issue have gray space devices...so the white and gold ones are not affected?? Someone has a white one thats pops?

    To Alphacat,

Yours is probably the most helpful post in this thread so far ;-). Figures the cellular carriers would be more open about the problem, since if you bought it through them, they must have some responsibility to back it up. A little surprised they were so frank about it, and gave out a roadmap for the upcoming iOS updates. But I'm amazed that Apple didn't slap them with some kind of embargo on discussing it.

I don't use my Air 2 a lot (64GB Space Gray, WiFi, week 44 build), but have counted myself lucky to not have had any problems many of the folks here are having, just the tinny sounding, buzzy speakers ;-). Just to play it safe, I've been passing on the iOS updates until this is all worked out, so thank you for the heads up on Apple's plan.

    Alphacatt,

What an amazingly long statement but, well said. This latest update solved my popping and clicking issue but as for my WiFi it still does not refresh when it should especially at start up. Safari still lags about two to three seconds (if not longer) before going to a site. Websites do not refresh as they should. In other words it takes for ever for some pages to res and there is lag when browsing sites especially the app store. But Apple is working feverishly to solve the problem. Too funny...

Tim Cook announced the Apple Watch will come out in April. WOW... since when does Apple announce release dates publicly? I know, when they want their stock to increase and Apple wants everyone to look over there instead of focusing on this silly popping issue that Apple knows nothing about. He also stated something about iOS 8.3 to come right before the AWatch since it will have the "Apple Watch Kit".

Apple may just wait to cure the enormous amount of bugs with iOS 8 until iOS 9. Since there are still so many issues it will virtually be a new iOS. Just look back at the last and most recent updates they basically fixed the entire iOS so far. As for Yosemite what a bunch of junk. I like the continuity between devices when it works right but at a great sacrifice. Just as iOS 8, Yosemite is riddled with bugs. An average of an update a week since I bought the MBA and MBP. Oh well, life will go on.

Anyway I am glad this last update cured the popping iPads. I look forward to either iOS 8.3 or iOS 9 thou.

By the way I heard if you are still having crackling, popping, or distortion. Reset all settings and erase data from settings on your device then try restoring to factory or "New iPad"  using an updated version of iTunes. I first updated via WiFi to iPad Air 2 and I still had some problems. So Customer Service said, "unfortunately this update works best after you reset and erase all settings and content and then connecting to the newly updated iTunes to restore to "NEW iPad". Do not restore from a previous Back Up." You want to save your contacts in iCloud then restore those but do not restore your previous settings.

When I did that it worked just fine after that. Pop free iPad Air 2, 128 GB, 5,4, Silver, week 51. Sorry to be lengthy too, but there has been a lot to share regarding this stuff.

None of my iPhone 6's are popping or did they ever pop. I received all of them at the release date and a week later due to "only two per customer restrictions". So I researched it and I did not find out anything regarding the iPhone 6 having a popping issue other than a few YouTube videos.

Finally the speaker, singular due to there is only one in the iPads, is always on if the iPad is on or not in sleep mode. The same for all Apple devices. It takes more power to turn a speaker on and off then to leave it on while in use.

    Happy iPadding everyone

    RobS10,

The Carriers are stuck with the returns and have to negotiate terms with the great Apple empire so it does them no harm to tell folks the truth. In a sense it is a good thing for both entities less returns and hassles. I do know that the big three Ivory towers are battling it out as we talk.

Check out stock monitoring websites and there are a lot of interesting things to learn regarding Apple and Foxconn.

Good info as well, NoPCinHere. I just figured the Great and Might One would tell the carriers to toe the same line they have been telling everyone, which is "Hmm, that's interesting...I've never heard this before"...
