Q: iPad air 2 pop noise

My iPad Air 2 randomly has a "Pop Noise" out of the speaker. it happens randomly about once or twice a day when touching the screen or pressing a button. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Could it be a software issue or has it more likely to do with the hardware?

    UPDATE

I finally got a full refund for my iPop Air 2 wifi 128GB!

Pops, Crackles, Speaker Vibrations and Screen Distortions are a thing of the past for me! HURRAY!!!!

For those of you in the EU I recommend you take advantage of our consumer laws and demand a full refund. It's been 4 months since release and there is still no fix for any of the issues with this model. Apple know but don't seem to care.

This is not the first time I've had issues with an Apple product and their quality control has only gotten worse over the last decade.

I seriously doubt they'll be getting any business from me in the future.

    Good luck everyone!

Iam happy for you Architecton. But a question!

If the Case/Speaker vibration not a design "problem"? Or are you talking about a prototype Ipad Air 3 or 4?.

And if you perform this procedure 20-30 with 100% battery.

    Really no Pops?

It is known by now that at least this "Pops" with deactivated key tones do not show up .

Meanwhile, I have mine replaced. Result of the replacement unit with key tones active = Pops

    Hi Tscherb!

It is not software and I personally consider this delusional theory just wishful thinking. All iPad Air 2s are IDENTICAL hardware wise and therefore ALL units would produce the pop / crackle sound... except perhaps the faulty ones?!?!

Apple has sold Millions of Air 2s since October yet this thread is only 56 pages long... To me this practically proved that our iPops were part of a faulty batch and that we should simply take them back for replacement / refund. Everybody else I know who has bought one are enjoying a pop free user experience...

Even If Apple were able to remedy the problem with a software patch that could somehow only target the affected units, the tiny, ultra sensitive speakers inside would already have been seriously compromised. This issue has been reported since day one and those iPops are 4 months old now...

Just take them back and don't take no for an answer. (or accept a refurbished unit as replacement!)

Problem is that is not a simply task you know what i mean. You can't obligue Apple to give you a brand new device.

Suppose you take your device and the employee tells you:

    1) He accepts the device is faulty and gives you a brand new one.

    2) He doesn't accept the device is faulty and denies to give you a brand new one. What else can you do? A show, yell at the store, don't move until they give a brand new one? they may call the police..

    Second step

You get a brand new one:

    1) It doesnt pop end of the story you have a happy customer finally.

    2) It pops again, you finish like you started.

Chances are pretty low 50 -50 and 2 steps. Worth it? i don't know maybe not.

This is exactly the pop my device is doing Tscherb but randomly.

    Hi Psikofunkser!

    Here is what i did:

    1. My device produced a LOUD popping sound at seemingly random moments so I used the safari method to forcibly reproduce it and made a video. It is very important to make a video of your OWN device and not simply refer to the ones made by others.
    2. My screen showed distortion on the left side when the ipop was held with one hand in portrait mode. I made a video of that while holding it with just 3 fingers.
    3. The speakers would always vibrate when playing sound effects or music seriously compromising sound quality. I made a video of that as well.

I then called Apple US and opened a case with them so that I could report the issues and sent an email to the representative with a brief explanation and all video links. They then deferred me to the Apple Authorized Repair Service as we don't have a proper Apple store in my country.

Finally I wrote a report with the official Apple Case ID number i got earlier, explaining all my findings in detail along with the video links and with precise instructions on how to successfully reproduce them for the Apple engineers.

The purpose of this was to make them acknowledge the defects on paper and in the form of an official technical report.

I live in the EU where the Apple 12 month warranty is practically considered complimentary. All products sold here come with at least a 2 year warranty provided by the SELLER. This is also the reason why I always object their offers for exchange with refurbished units. Refurbished units are commercially available products with different product codes that can be had at significantly lower prices... THROUGH APPLE!!

The Laws here are specific! They either replace with an identical Retail & Factory Sealed Unit or they have to offer a full refund.

Obviously you need to contact the consumer protection agency in your country and get advice on how to proceed. I highly recommend you demand a full refund for now and WAIT a couple of months until the faulty batch in your area has been sold off.

The popping sound was more frequent at 100% with the charger plugged in but it would also pop at 90%.

The video I made was used as evidence in a legal dispute against the seller so unfortunately I cannot share it online, sorry.

Ok np i asked you that cause issues 2 are 3 affect all the ipads not only yours.

Apple USA is telling me that they can ONLY offer me 1 solution here in Mexico City: they might give me a refurbished replacement. I'd gladly post their names but i know that its forbidden here at the forums.

I want to mention that they obviously not call them "refurbished" they said is a new device without the box or the accesories. Take it or leave it, no money refund for me or a brand new box as replacement. Viva Mexico!

Congrats to the people who received a satisfactory solution from Apple in your countries there, in mine i am the first case reporting this issue according to Apple, i guess i should better visit a shrink instead of complaining about a pop noise...

I really want to help you but unfortunately I don't speak any Spanish so I can't find any details on consumer laws in Mexico.

Of course Apple cannot offer you a refund or a new replacement. You did not purchase your iPad directly from them...

You need to get in touch with your SELLER and negotiate a solution. Before that can happen though you first need an official paper from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider that states your device is indeed faulty.

Don't expect to get this sorted overnight. I had to talk to 5 different parties including a law firm and wait for 3 whole weeks before I got my refund.

At least some progress for you.  It's clearly written in Apple's Warranty that replacement may be refurbished.  This is not necessarily a "bad" thing.  Refurbs are tested to a much higher level than a brand new device rolling off the production line.  I received a refurb iPhone several years ago.  It was great and I never had any issues with it.

Given how difficult getting anyone to offer you a replacement, you should take this offer without hesitation.

I do truly hope it works out well for you.  I mean that.

Thanks man and thx for your commentary yes you may have a positive point here. Problem is that is not an offer at least not yet, first they need to check the one i already have and then after that they "may" replace it, maybe yes maybe not.

I've already had problems with an apple device in the past i took it for repair, after 2 weeks, they gave it back to me and told me it had absolutely nothing, Sir now go home....and it had...my issue was only fixed by me when i bought the new generation of that device the next year...

You mentioned Apple's warranty: replacement may refurbished or...may be not at least NOT for the States residents.....you know what i mean different treatment...

Me i tend to be a little pessimist on most scenarios i always want to contemplate both sides. Replacement could be perfect man but also could be worst it may not have the pop issue but what about something extra? dead pixel, faulty battery or something else....

Have this night to think what i'm going to do...

    Hi

OK, how it happened to me. I bought my IPad Air 2 on release and never had any problem. After update to version 8.1.3, the newest, the device had no sound anymore. I thought, ok, then I reboot it again, also it rebooted before when doing the update. After this second reboot sound was back but with these described popup noises, in some games as Solitaire or Billard really very anoying. So I thought I boot it again today. Now sound has gone, I can reboot as much as I will, I get now sound anymore it's dead, and I really have all checked, don't tell me I should see if loudness is not zero and all the other things. I believe each device with the popup sound will earlier or later give up the sound totally. So I really need to exchange it now, things the soundcard or whatever has given up to work.

    Fritz
