Oct 26, 2014 9:32 PM in response to ngowllandby Linc Davis,Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Oct 27, 2014 11:06 AM in response to ngowllandby Linc Davis,Back up all data before proceeding.
1. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
2. Repeat with this line:
/Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your administrator login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Oct 27, 2014 3:23 PM in response to ngowllandby Ralphemc,AOL tech support says that Apple's new Yosemite software to communicate with AOL's SMTP is faulty and both are currently at work on a solution (Oct. 27). I called AOL Tech Support for Mac in Romania twice and they said this is widespread and has a priority with upper level tech support, but did not know when it might be solved. I've been down now for three days and counting...

Oct 29, 2014 10:17 AM in response to Linc Davisby ngowlland,Hi there
I have tried the above, but get no response from either step 1 or 2. No folder opens, nor is any error message displayed. When I proceed through the Finder / Go / Go to Folder route by copying and pasting the two lines you specify in steps 1 and 2, I get no folders displayed.
Suggestions? I am in check!

Oct 30, 2014 5:29 PM in response to ngowllandby Linc Davis,Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
If Mail crashes or freezes immediately on launch, try the steps suggested on this page. Sometimes a corrupt message on a mail server can be deleted by logging in to the server through its web page. If Mail still crashes on launch, skip to Step 3.
Step 2
Select all your mailboxes, and then select
Mailbox ▹ Export Mailbox...
from the Mail menu bar. Export the mailboxes to the Desktop folder.
Make a note of the settings for all your Mail accounts – everything you'd need to reconstruct the settings from scratch.
Quit Mail.Step 3
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items (some may not exist) from the folder that opens to the Desktop:
Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd
Containers/com.apple.mail
Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Mail
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were setting it up for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts, using the information you noted earlier. Test. If Mail works now, recreate the rest of your settings.
If there’s no improvement, quit Mail and put back the items you moved to the Desktop, replacing any newer ones that may have been created in their place. Stop here and post your results.Step 4
This step should not be necessary with IMAP or Exchange mailboxes, because they synchronize automatically with the server. Nevertheless, if the mailboxes are very large, importing them may spare you the need for a long download.
If you took Step 2, import the mailboxes you exported:
File ▹ Import Mailbox...
If you skipped Step 2, look inside the Mail folder on the Desktop for a subfolder Mail/V2/Mailboxes. Import the mailboxes it contains.
Test. If Mail is still working, delete the items you moved to the Desktop in Step 3.

Nov 1, 2014 1:33 AM in response to Linc Davisby ngowlland,Many thanks for all your help. I now have a functioning Mail app, although I'm not sure what caused the problem in the first place! Very much appreciated.

Nov 1, 2014 7:43 AM in response to Ralphemcby Ralphemc,Just an update note about my case -- I finally called tech support (Apple) and they found that AOL tech had given me the wrong SMTP port number, so that while Apple and AOL may have fixed the overall Yosemite/AOL Mail problem, my computer was still down for days because of the port assignment. Mail is now working, but pages load very sluggishly, or only less than halfway on the loadingprogress bar and have to be reloaded.

Jan 16, 2015 4:37 AM in response to Linc Davisby Chris Sansom,I have a different, but possibly related, problem with Mail. I've looked at both your solutions above, Linc, but neither seems to fit the bill here because Mail didn’t actually crash. The only things in ~/Library/Mail/Bundles are Signature Profiler and SpamSieve and I don't even have a /Library/Mail folder. In any case, if I were to move stuff out and restart Mail it could be several weeks or never before I know whether this has worked, because my problem seems to happen at random...
Since I upgraded to Yosemite before Christmas, the following has happened twice, the second time just this morning: I leave the Mac for an extended period (several hours or, in the last case, overnight) and when I come back I find a nasty message on the screen saying I'm out of system memory and all my apps have been paused, with an offer to force-quit them (in effect it's a more elaborate version of the standard force-quit window). The Mac appears to have more or less frozen (I have seconds showing on my menubar clock, and they're not ticking over). However, when I've force-quit a few apps things loosen up enough for me to launch Activity Monitor where I see, in the Memory tab, that Mail has gobbled up over 56 GB of memory instead of its usual 100 MB or so. I restart and all appears to be well again. So Mail hasn’t actually crashed, just completely fouled up the system.
This time, in Console I see repeated countless times (hundreds every second) this pair of lines:
16/01/2015 04:24:55.136 Mail[290]: *** Assertion failure in -[MCSocket readBytes:maxLength:error:], /SourceCache/Mail/Mail-1993/MailCore/Networking/MCSocket.m:464
16/01/2015 04:24:55.136 Mail[290]: exception parsing IMAP response: trying to read/write concurrently
After a lot of very patient 'Click "earlier", scroll to the top, click "earlier", scroll to the top...' in Console I finally get back to the beginning of it where I find this:
16/01/2015 02:47:12.827 Mail[290]: AOSKit ERROR: XPC CLIENT: Connection [0x7fc69f0ed510] event handler received event with type: [XPC_TYPE_ERROR]. Description: [Connection interrupted]
16/01/2015 03:47:13.276 Mail[290]: AOSKit ERROR: XPC CLIENT: Connection [0x7fc69f008b70] event handler received event with type: [XPC_TYPE_ERROR]. Description: [Connection interrupted]
16/01/2015 04:24:55.099 Mail[290]: *** Assertion failure in -[MCSocket readBytes:maxLength:error:], /SourceCache/Mail/Mail-1993/MailCore/Networking/MCSocket.m:464
...etc...
Note that there's a gap of an hour between the first two messages, and a further gap of 37 minutes or so before the flood begins at 04:24:55.
If I turn off the Mail filter in Console, in between the above lines I'm getting a recurrence of something I thought I'd fixed with the help of another discussion here. Every ten seconds I see this:
16/01/2015 02:48:27.433 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.mdworker.bundles[41343]) Could not find uid associated with service: 0: Undefined error: 0 501
16/01/2015 02:48:27.433 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.mdworker.bundles) Service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 10 seconds.
...but with a different number after 'bundles' in the first line. 501 is a non-existent user id, and I thought I'd changed them all to my current id which is 503, but I'll take another look. Could this be related to the Mail problem? I suspect not as it had been going on for some time before 2:47 - since midnight in fact and the first Mail message after that in Console is the one above at 2:47.
What does all this mean and is there anything I can do about it?

Oct 3, 2016 9:38 AM in response to nemtsovby Eric Root,You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one. Post in the Sierra community.
Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.
Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.
If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.
