kernel panic using chrome?

Hi

Since like 3 weeks ago, my macbook pro Retina 13 inches start to have a kernel panic. I literally looked through everything and it seems like every time I use Chrome, kernel starts to panic and freezes up my entire computer. Any help on this?

Hopefully the following information is helpful

Hello and greetings!

Im experiencing Kernel Panics up to 2 time daily.

Deleted the Flux app recently thinking it was the culprit.

Am suspecting its Google Chrome, but after reviewing this thread, am following these instructions.

I hope you can help!

I have omitted the UUID.

I had a similar issue, perhaps once a week I would get a Kernel Panic error and machine would restart.

If you haven't already, suggest running the System Diagnostics Tool (hold 'D' on startup). When I did this, it showed a potential problem with the memory module. Took it in to the local Apple Store and they confirmed the issue - it's now in for repair where they're replacing the main logic board.

Chrome cannot cause kernel panics.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

Hi

So I guess I did not fully understand what kernel panic was until now. I did follow your instructions but did not find anything '.panic' reports there. So I guess after all it was not a kernel panic. However, I still do get really high CPU usage from both Google Chrome Helper and kernel_task when I look at Activity Monitor. At one point kernel_task was using over 1100% of CPU!!

Any other suggestions?

Btw, thanks for all the help you guys offered. Not only Linc Davis, but also Ogelthorpe and archerydave 🙂

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.

Throttling

When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:

☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board

☞ high ambient temperature

☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable

☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component

Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.

If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.

Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.

Installed software

User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.

Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data

Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.

External display

Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

Oct 26, 2014 7:31 PM in response to Linc Davis

Currently, I am using two-24 inches LED monitors. But when I use them, I always close the life so only two monitors running.

So I tested out power this time. Under the same conditions that I had before (meaning problem still in existence), I took out the power cord. Then the computer just shut down. Btw, the battery was already full... so I assume there is no reason for the Macbook Pro to consume so much voltage. Yet it still shut down...

But you are right on temperature problem. Whenever the kernel goes insane, the temperature is also crazy hot and I can actually hear the machine running wild too.

Idk which one is the problem...monitors or the temperature (or both?) I am leaned towards more on connecting two LED monitors... so I am going to test that out more thoroughly. I will let you know.

Oct 26, 2014 7:49 PM in response to kdk411

It sounds like you have some kind of hardware problem.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Hi

So recently, my computer got really hot (and slow again), so I just put it into sleep mode to cool it down. When I tried to wake it up, it warned me that there was a problem and the computer restarted. The following is the report on it:
