changing EXS24 patches using midi controller

hi, i'm new to the forum and fairly new to midi so i'm hoping this is a basic question that can quickly be answered.

i'm using a kurzweil k2k to play the EXS24, works great. but, if i want to change programs i am having to go back to the EXS24 window and manually flip through programs by titles. on my k2k i can flip through programs in the keyboard's hard drive using a wheel. is there a way to use this wheel to flip through the EXS24 programs? in the transport bar, when i spin the k2k wheel, i'm seeing that it's flipping through numbers so it is recognizing a midi commands, but for some reason it's not assigning it to switching patches.

i've done some research in the past threads for an answer and couldn't find it. if there's a past thread that answers this please paste the link, or a response here would be great too. thanks in advance for your help!

What MIDI data is the K2K sending when you increment and decrement the wheel?

Logic has the key commands "Select Next/Previous EXS instrument" which you can assign to MIDI commands. It might be possible to use the wheel to go up and down, but you'd be better off just assigning a next and previous instrument key command and/or buttons on your MIDI controller.

in the transport area it's showing a number where you'd
normally see velocity when you strike a key.

Thanks, but that's not exactly descriptive, I can't do much with that. Is it controller data? What controller number? What are the values as the wheel turns? What's the lowest and highest value?

maybe logic is misassigning this wheel,

I'm not sure what you mean here.

or is there a way to reassign it in logic?

Logic can do almost anything to MIDI data, that is one of it's strengths.

or from the keyboard?

I don't know, I've never used one.

an you tell me how to assign a key to do the next/previous instrument?

Logic -> Preferences -> Key Commands

You won't be able to use the wheel to step through EXS instruments in the same way you can select patches on the Kurz, but try it and see how far you get.

i see, okay more info. i'm not sure what the data is. the numbers go from 0 to 99 when i turn the wheel. i just noticed a strange thing happens when i hit 99, the cycle bar turns on, if that's what you call it (the green bar in top of the arrange window that allows you to pick a length of time and cycle it). i asked if it was "misassigning" the wheel because it's clearly being picked up by logic, but it appears to not know it's a wheel to scroll through programs.

can you be a little more specific about how to assign key commands once you're in that menu? do i change the midi drop menu from "unused" to "program change" for a way to globally scroll through programs in synths, or open the exs24 menu and work there? i'm nervous about making these changes and not having any idea what i'm doing in there.

before you write a response, i'm finding that the wheel is sending a midi signal with each click. but the problem is that each click is being recognized as a unique number, which won't allow one click to the right to move to the next instrument, or one to the left to move back an instrument. is there a way to have logic recognize a click clockwise as a generic "+" (and associate that with next instrument) and the same for a counterclockwise click.

if this doesn't work, which i'm beginning to think it won't, i figured out how to use the keyboard in order to jump forward/back in the keyboard shortcuts, thanks for that tip.
