VPN connection to work

hi guys, what am I doing wrong? I am trying to set up a VPN connection to work (windows server) from home (iMac). I am using internet connect, and putting in my IP address, I have my user name and password, and am putting in my shared key. But each time I try to connect I get the error message "the server did not respond. please verify the server address and try again." I can ping the IP address fine though. any ideas?

I just set up a VPN system from my home network to my work network running Server 10.4.3. I kept running into that same problem and it wasn't until I opened up some ports on my work firewall that everything worked flawlessly. I am wireless @ home to a D-Link router, and wired @ work to a router, getting a dynamic IP from our ADSL provider, with server, not router giving DHCP. I did have to change my home network DHCP settings, 192.168.3.0 for home, and 192.168.0.0 for work. Conflicts occur if they area the same.

Here is the post I started, which helped very much. This covered everything but which ports to open. When I get to work I can post them here.

Have fun and hope some of this helps.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far, but still no joy I'm afraid. Ive tried my iMac & my XP laptop, with and without my router, and still I'm getting an "error 792: The L2TP connection attempt failed because security negotiation timed out." (Win XP) or "The Server did not respond. please verify the server address and try again" (OS X) message. If anyone has any more ideas I'd be very grateful.
