How do I hide certain shared (google) calendars from "today"

This is a pretty specific question. Here it goes:

I use google calendars for my calendars, not iCloud calendars.

I view my own and a bunch of shared calendars in iCal on my Mac (OS X Yosemite) and on my iPhone (iOS 8). This all works great. No complaints there.

Some of the shared calendars aren't "mine" per-se. One is my wife's personal calendar, one is her work calendar, others are of sports teams I follow, etc.

What I want is to be able to hide some of these calendars from the "today" panel in both OS X and iOS. (I am referring to the panel that shares space with the Notifications Center on both systems. Clicking the 'lines' icon in the absolute top-right of the OS X screen and the 'swipe down from the top of the screen' panel in iOS.) I would like to not see events that are not really my appointments in this area. I am happy to see them on the calendar itself as a reference.

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance,

Dan Hewins
