Q: My MBP has become unbearably slow after upgrading to OS X Yosemite.

My MBP has become unbearably slow after upgrading to OS X Yosemite. I have deleted some programmes that I do not need and browsed the web for solutions in vain. It is a MBP from late 2011, i5 processor with 8 GB RAM. I ran an EtreCheck and the information is displayed below. Any sort of help on this would be much appreicated.

Thanks,

Hummerville

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

Thank you Linc Davis! The computer takes longer to load upon turning it on. The comes the case of the browsers. I have tried with Firefox, Safari and Chrome and pages take a while to load. Switching between tabs is also slow as well as typing. Furthermore, watching videos on VLS is almost impossible. I have done a backup of all data, deleted some old programmes as well as one I don't really need, created space on the hard disk and emptied my trash but today is the fourth day and it is still crawling.

Thanks Eric for the links. I will take a look at them now.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

I followed the steps you provided and this is a sample of some of actions I am having trouble with. I hope they make sense to you. Once again, your help is much appreciated.

When you upgraded to Yosemite, did you activate FileVault?

Yes I did. I also checked and I think FileVault is the culprit. It is still encrypting and by the look of things, it has gotten stuck about 70% through and I have been monitoring it now for about six hours.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

Try turning off iCloud in system preferences. This worked for me. I was having the same problem. I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)

    Good Luck.

Hello, sorry for the very late response. I was away for a few weeks holiday and far from the worries of a slow computer. I came back and decided to stop encryption and as soon as FileVault started decrypting, everything returned to normal. Thank you very much for the support and I hope nothing like this happens again.
