Resetting iphone 4 without wifi

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to reset an iphone 4 which I want to give to a friend after not using it for 5 months.

I've put it on now, but the wifi is greyed out (and the bluetooth keeps showing the circle, suggesting it's searching) and i need internet to connect to the my AppleID.

I've tried all the resets available in 'settings', but for a full reset it needs my AppleID verified online. My new workphone is a Samsung and therefore I can't switch to the micro SIM so I can have internet through roaming.

Any suggestions on how to handle this? I've read the trouble with the greyed out Wifi, which is new to me. But will a full scale wipe and reset this issue? I've got all my data transferred already, so not worried about the data. But the first thing is to wipe it, which is not possible now.

Thanks for your answer!
