    Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.

    To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

    • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

    Your Mac needs:

    • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
    • 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
    • 8 GB or more of available space

    Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

    Do a backup before installing.

    Thx Eric, I was told by Apple support to download Mavericks !, I have 10.6.8, It is the download I need.

    However, it's no longer available on Apple store, they bump up to Yosemite. It's an old machine, just trying to keep it alive for as long as possible, adobe no longer likes 10.6.8

    You will need more than 2GB RAM or it will move very slowing if at all.

    This indicates that the system is accessing the hard drive to use for memory, which will definitely slow the computer down. As tbirdvet posted, you need more RAM. 4GB is about the minimum.

    You are welcome.

    Thx to you both;

    OK, so does that mean I hurl the machine in the trash, because its old & not enough memory ? or is there something that can be done ?

    Apple give almost nothing for a trade in.......really, Do I need another one, I can buy a new PC per year & save money !

    Your model of MacbookPro, 5,1, can be upgraded to 8 GB of memory.  The most reliable sources of memory are either Crucial.com or otherworldcomputing.com.

    At Crucial you can get two 4 GB modules for $43.99 each.
