When I upgraded to Yosemite, my custom stationery was removed. Fortunately I have a backup of that file. However, the full file path to where the stationery was once stored no longer exists. Why did Apple change this? Does anyone know where I need to put this file?

The location from which I ‘recovered’ my custom mail stationary, that disappeared with the YOSEMITE upgrade, is as follows
Macintosh HD/Users/(myAcctName)/ Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Application Support/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/Resources/
….There were no other folders here indicative of Apple’s default stationary, which leads me assume they were moved during the upgrade)
The path Mail now appears to be using after a YOSEMITE upgrade is:
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Apple/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/Resources/
….at which location you’ll find the Apple Stationary folders of Announcements, Birthday, Photos, Sentiments, and Stationary. To these I added the ‘my’ folder, “Custom”, (that I found, detailed above). Following that, my custom mail stationary appeared in Apple Mail.
Any idea how can i edit them from here. Apparently thre is some saving bug and they dont appear as they should and I cannot see the name so I cannot chose the right one to use.
My "Custom" folder and files are intact when I upgraded to Yosemite. Using Finder I did go to the folder and confirmed that the folder matched my Mavericks folder content. My problem is that in a "New" mail while using the stationary option I cannot scroll to the right to access any of the folder selections. I can click on and use any visible choice, but, cannot access the remainder of options that should be available on that row.

Good news - it was easy to fix. Here's how to do it.
1. Look in your backup (Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner, etc. - you do have a backup don't you?) and follow this path:
~ / users / (your user name) / Library / Application Support / Mail / Stationery / Apple / Contents / Resources / Custom
2. Copy (command c) the Custom folder
3. Look in your new Yosemite HD and follow this path:
~ / Library / Application Support / Apple / Mail/Stationery / Apple / Contents / Resources
4.Open the Resources folder and paste (command v) the Custom folder that you copied earlier.
Worked perfectly for me. Hope this helps!
BTW, if you have problems scrolling through your custom stationery, try going into your System Preferences>General and choose Show Scroll Bars>Always. There should be a scroll bar below your stationery.

THANKS! Solved my major issues. I just changed my Preference setting for scrolling, as you suggested, & confirmed that now the email horizontal stationary scroll function works so that I can access all of my "other" templates.

I cannot find the stationary that used to be on my mac. I have read the recommendations but I do not have any idea where you put, find, or post this:

I saw nothing like this on my computer. I felt like I looked everywhere i.e. file? View, etc....

Ha! I finally found it under "View" then customize toolbar, show stationary icon.
The answer from Jim Cole helped me.
However moving the custom folder to where is should be
in Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Apple/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/Resources/ (next to the "Announcements", "Birthdays",.. folder) is not enough.
I had to edit the plist to make the moved Custom section appear; and then the stationery templates would appear with no thumbnail -- so I had to edit those plist as well.
Further, the command "save as stationery" still wants to save the new stationery to the folder
Macintosh HD/Users/(myAcctName)/ Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Application Support/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/Resources/
Bottom line. It's too much trouble.
Just make a note to yourself that the "Custom folder" is in this new, quirky location and that's where you need to go if you want to edit your template.
In Sierra 10.13 it is under: ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/Resources/Stationery/Contents/
