fuji finepix XP70 not recognized in imovie

Hi,

When I connect my Fuji Finepix XP70 to my imac, it is not recognized in iMovie, image capture or anywhere else. The LCD on the camera says "USB", but it doesn't show up as an available camera. Fuji has a lame wireless app that works, but is painfully slow.

Is buying an SD card reader the bottom line to all these compatibility issues?
