Wired keyboard not working

I have been having trouble with the wired keyboard only working intermittently with my RT macbook pro, it does not recognise the keyboard as being plugged into the usb port, usually a restart fixed this problem.

After installing yosemite the keyboard no longer works at all unless the extension cable for it is used, tried restarting and a PRAM reset and nothing changed, any ideas?
