Q: ipod turned itself off and wont turn back on

When using my ipod it turned itself off while in my pocket - I simply thought that the battery had died, however when I got home I put it on charge and it isn't turning back on. There is nothing appearing on the screen to say that it is charging either and when connected to my laptop iTunes isn't recognising that its there.
