Repairing bootcamp core storage issue

I am having an issue with my iMac. It is a late 2013 model with a 3 TB fusion drive. While trying to remove and start over on a windows bootcamp partition, there was a crash on the windows side and now I can not remove the partitions or run bootcamp.

I have tried running all the terminal commands in all the different threads I could find.

The one that I removed was 1 TB, but I think it came out ok. The one I was trying to build was roughly that size, though I don't have the exact number written down. When I look in disk utility this is the partition marked 04, which is the bootcamp crash. It is in the middle of two mac partitions and has a message that says the full size of the Fusion Drive is not available for repartitioning.

Thanks

Jimmy

There is no Logical Volume in the LVG "04".

You can create one using (using the UUID from your output).

diskutil cs createVolume 76834525-0EEA-4DCB-82E2-37B79D6FDCF2 jhfs+ BOOTCAMP 100%

diskutil cs createVolume

Usage: diskutil coreStorage createVolume lvgUUID|lvgName type name size

[-stdinpassphrase | -passphrase [passphrase]]

Add a new logical volume to a CoreStorage logical volume group.

Type is the file system to initialize on the new logical volume. Valid types

are Journaled HFS+ or Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+ or their aliases.

Size is the amount of space to allocate from the parent logical volume group.

Valid sizes are floating-point numbers with a suffix of B(ytes), S(512-byte-

blocks), K(ilobytes), M(egabytes), G(igabytes), T(erabytes), P(etabytes),

or (%) a percentage of the current size of the logical volume group.

Example: diskutil coreStorage createVolume

11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 jhfs+ myLV 10g

You can resize the "04" volume using

diskutil cs resizeVolume

diskutil cs resizeVolume

Usage: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume

lvUUID|MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode size

Resize a logical volume, which is one of one or more disks that consume storage

out of a logical volume group. The logical volume group will have more or less

available space after this operation, if it was a shrink or grow, respectively.

Example: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume

11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 10g

Oct 28, 2014 6:58 PM in response to Loner T

This looks like it might be heading in the right direction. It now says it is a bootcamp partition. Bootcamp instead of crashing now says it is a partition that was made in another tool and can not work with it. Still the same errors when I try to run the list of commands you gave.

Windows needs a MSDOS (FAT32) partition.

The Bootcamp volume should be converted back to plain JHFS+, and Disk Utility should reformat it as FAT32. The following command reverts it back to JHFS+.

diskutil cs revert D5472200-7459-4A63-9C1A-31782B061B8A

diskutil cs revert

Usage: diskutil coreStorage revert

MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode|lvUUID

[-stdinpassphrase | -passphrase [passphrase] | -recoverykeychain file]

Convert a CoreStorage logical volume back to its native type.

If you are attempting to revert a disk on which conversion was started but

which could not be unmounted, you must eject the disk or reboot first.

The file system must be mounted and resizable (i.e. Journaled HFS+).

Ownership of the affected disk and a passphrase (if encrypted) is required.

Ok I am getting a new error now with this line.

Looks like that is a step closer. It has taken the separate partitions and placed them back under the Macintosh HD partition. The third one is now labeled as untitled instead of bootcamp and it says that I can click - to merge it in disk utility. Not sure if I should or not. It still says the full size of the partition is not available for repartitioning though. Bootcamp is back to the startup disk is not available error again.

Re-format the volume using FAT32 as diskutil eraseVolume fat32 BOOTCAMP disk0s4

I will usually provide a reference for commands as follows. If you do not need them for future commands I can remove them if you like. In general it helps with unfamiliar commands before they are executed.

diskutil eraseVolume

Usage: diskutil eraseVolume format name MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode

Completely erase a disk (partition or whole), laying down a new file system

volume. Ownership of the affected disk is required. Format is the specific

file system personality name (or alias) you want to erase it as (JHFS+, etc.).

Name is the (new) volume name (subject to file system naming restrictions), or

can be specified as %noformat% to skip initialization (to skip newfs). You

cannot erase the boot volume.

Example: diskutil eraseVolume JHFS+ UntitledHFS /Volumes/SomeDisk

diskutil listFilesystems

Formattable file systems

These file system personalities can be used for erasing and partitioning.

When specifying a personality as a parameter to a verb, case is not considered.

Certain common aliases (also case-insensitive) are listed below as well.
