Q: Low memory

Ok this is really a tip for people, after I updated to iOS 8 I started getting a lot of low memory warnings on my iPad air, looking at the usage suggested this should not be the case so I did the unthinkable and did a complete reset then restored from my iCloud backup, I now have a super fast iPad again and have over 9GB of space again. I have no idea how or why the memory ended up so full other than to think it may be something to do with logging during updates. Hopefully this will help others who have this issue. I also want to say how impressed I am with the way the iPad restored from the backup, very smooth and has given me a lot of confidence for the future.

    I think you mean "storage space" ... :-) ...

For those who don't know the steps, the last link below will tell you - and you need to use iTunes for a "clean install". Be sure to do your backups, too!

I do not want to argue semantics but yes storage space if you must, as it happens I may have talked to soon as in the last 8 hours during which the iPad has been used for a couple of hours the storage space has reduced by 400MB, at this rate it will be back to being "full" in about a week.

Full of what I am too polite to say but I do object to being an unpaid beta tester for a poorly developed product, Apple products used to be a lot better than this.

The reason why I say that about " memory" is because that's the way it's used. For instance, if you want to see this for yourself, you can go to many different utility apps at the App Store and see the various categories and things that they track on your iPad ... two of which are named "memory" and "disk space". Under "memory" you'll find it broken down into -- Active Memory, Wired Memory, Inactive Memory and Free Memory. This memory is also referred to as RAM, or "Random Access Memory".

And in a different place in these utilities, you'll find a reference to "Disk Space" or disk storage. With the iPad, the disk storage will be 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB. And the "Memory" will be 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB or 2 GB.

They are distinctly different from one another just as much as "bicycle" is distinct from "automobile" ... even though both get a person down the road. One wouldn't refer to pointing out that something is a "bicycle" and not an "automobile" ... as a matter of semantics ... :-) ... and neither is it merely "semantics" with "memory" and "disk space" or storage.

If you were talking about a single vehicle then it would be a bicycle or an automobile, bad analogy but entertaining.

It fits for the idea of "semantics" ... :-) ...

Not really but thanks for suggesting I look for an app, I have one now that gives me a more detailed view of what is going on, hopefully it will give me better insight, there seems to be some question over some iPads using part of the flash storage to supplement the RAM and this not being refreshed subsequently filling the storage space with digital junk. Apple are asking people affected by this to replace their iPads so it seems Apple are aware of an issue affecting certain units.

I doubt Apple is having people buy new iPads because of how iOS 8.1 writes RAM to disk space ... LOL ... it's the very same iOS 8.1 they are using on the new iPads ... :-) ...

"Paging out" and "Paging in" is a process that Apple knows very well how to do and has been doing it for a very long time.

As suspected, the iPad storage space is rapidly being filled up with all I can assume is Virtual RAM and this is not being refreshed, a known issue judging by what I have read on the net, so it looks like I will have to contact Apple to arrange a replacement.

A replacement would indicate there is a hardware problem to the issue. However, I don't see "paging in" and "paging out" as a hardware issue ... unless you're saying that the flash drive is defective ... then "that" (a defective flash drive) would be a hardware issue.

I suppose that's what you're saying, in that the "flash drive" is defective, hence requiring a replacement iPad.

That is correct, there are faulty flash drives out there, I know this upsets those that worship at the altar of Apple but it is unfortunately indicative of what Apple has become.

I expect various hardware failures for a certain small percentage, but it's actually barely perceptible as a percentage.

But in all this time here on this forum for iOS 8, I've actually never seen one user reporting a failure from a bad flash drive. When Apple does a hardware check and verifies a bad flash drive on your iPad, yours will be the first one I've ever seen ... :-) ...  during the time that iOS 8 has been in service.

PPeople get flamed here for daring to suggest Apple has questionable quality control so they generally post their experiences elsewhere, if you live in microcosm your view will remain thus.
