Buffalo USB DVD Drive Problems (DVSM-PC58U2V-SVC on OS10.10)

I just purchased a Buffalo USB DVD Drive (DVSM-PC58U2V-SVC) and it doesn't register when I plug it in. I have a MacBook Pro running on Yosemite. When I connect the drive directly into the USB port, nothing happens (drive started flashing red but made no sound like it was trying to read the disc). When I used a USB extender, the drive sounded like it wanted to work (at least it made that typical CD spinning sound, but quickly stopped) and still nothing.

I contacted Buffalo about compatibility issues since the product did not list Yosemite 10.10, but they reassured me that it should still work on the new OS and to contact Apple instead.

Perhaps I have a malfunctioning product? Any ideas?

Old query but I just had a similar problem with my Buffalo DVSM-PC58U2VB optical drive. The drive blinked red (rear, top of drive) but when connected to an older iMac running same 10.12.2 OS X it was fine. Turns out the "newer" iMac has one USB port (closest to Thunderbolt ports) that provides 900mA vs the others that reported available 500mA. The drive works fine on this 900mA port -- don't know why exactly, perhaps the available power is actually greater on this one USB port. Glad I didn't need to buy a new optical drive (even though this Buffalo CD/DVD external drive is old).
