Q: OS X Yosemite RAM Issues - kernel_task

Hello All,

I have a Mid 2011 13" MBA with 4GB of RAM and 128GB SSD. As of yesterday my computer has been slow and sluggish. When I open the Activity Monitor, I see that kernel_task is taking up a lot of Memory - At some points 3.15GB. As of now its around 2GB. I upgraded to Yosemite last week sometime, so it was running well for a while. Are others having the same issue? (A google search says yes " high kernel_task usage " ... So does anyone have a fix?)

I appreciate any, and all the suggestions.

Thanks,

MD

I provide a lengthy list of the extensions on kernel from command line:

While you are in the Activity Monitor screen, tap the CPU column to see what activities (if any) are maxing out the CPU.

    Hi MD,

I have seen a lot of people posting about the speed of their 2011 MBP's here. I myself have a 15in early 2011 but won't upgrade due to the problems I have heard. The two things I have heard that could be causing this are indexing in spotlight (but I don't know if that is your case) and just the fact that Yosemite is an intense OS. Here is a link to another question that might be more helpful than I can be.

All bets are off until you get that "clean up" software out of there. Plus, you've got some funky stuff with sleep and trim handling. Anything low-level like that is likely to have problems on a new OS. Same goes for an enterprise VPN like Juniper. That can do all kinds of low-level stuff to spike the kernel memory usage. Finally, you have some mysterious kernel extension named "com.aliph.driver.jstub".

When you have unexplainable problems like this, standard procedure is to eliminate any potential 3rd party interference. Once you find out where the problem is, you can reinstall all of the other stuff. But the trick is to find out who the culprit is and sometimes it isn't easy.

Thanks for taking a look, Etersoft.

I created this thread due to chats in this other thread, Yosemite OS 10.10 Mail Memory Leak. I am not using my Mail App and my kernel_task is under control. I don't think any of the 3rd party apps are doing anything out of the ordinary - they could be ... but by not using the mail app for the last few hours, things are running smooth.

I am not sure what changed that made kernel_task go nuts with the Mail App open.

The com.aliph.driver.jstub extension is for my Jambox, but I rarely use it, so I removed it.

    Again, THANK YOU for looking.

Anyone else having RAM issues due to the Mail App?

I have read of other users having more severe cases of RAM utilization by kernel_task, but I don't understand how it continues to creep back up on my machine. A couple weeks ago I did a fresh install of Yosemite after identifying this problem, It resolved the high RAM value for kernel_task for a while, but it has resurfaced. Restarted and logged in with Guest profile, Kernel_Task is not listed. Please help me eliminate the leak.

By default, a new user will only be able to see that user's tasks in Activity Monitor. A guest may by even further restricted.

Everything you have posted looks perfectly normal. In fact, your kernel_task memory usage is exceptionally low.

Im having a similar issue with my 2011 mbp. I backed up everything and reset it and I'm still having ram issues. Is it because i recently upgraded to Yosemite?

You will get better help by starting your own thread instead of piggy-backing on someone else's months-old thread.

I don't know if you've solved your problem, but I note that you have the conditions I've just identified are causing a similar problem for me.  I'll outline the problem and the solution briefly.

    - Running Yosemite.

    - Start Jabber (or any other Java-based application) and let it keep running.

Watch the kernel_task memory gradually grow.  On my system, I usually start running out of application memory and getting my applications shut down when it gets to 9GB or so.

NOTE: Quitting the Java-based applications does not free whatever memory kernel_task is consuming.  The only solution I've found to reclaim the memory from kernel_task is to restart.

I have the latest Java installed and the latest Yosemite update.

TO TRY: Try not running Jabber or any other java-based app and see if your problem goes away.

    hope that helps.
