I've had my macbook a few years now and everything has been working fine, until a few days/weeks ago. My mail icon on my taskbar doesn't let me send emails any more. it receives emails and has always worked in the past, but now I have to log in to the internet and google to send emails, which has limited abilities compared to the mail icon. I have recently updated my operating system to Yosemite, any ideas ?

What happens when you your open the mail app and create a mew message and then try to sent it? Do you get an error message?
Who is the mail provider? (what is after @ sign in the email address)
Do you have more than one provider? If yes can yo send from any accounts?
Email opens as normal when using the icon as does everything else within the email window, only difference now is that once I've created my email and click send the message goes to my outbox and never actually get sent

I would verify the entries for the outgoing server i for the Gmail account. You might want to delete and then renter each settings. I would start with delete the Gmail account PW and reenter it.

Go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Google/Gmail (name depends on what it was called it when it was set up)>Account Information>Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
What is listed in there?
Gmail is listed
Click on the up/down arrows by Gmail and select edit SMTP server list.
What is listed under Advanced
Nothing listed in large window.
Underneath Advanced Automatically detect and maintain account settings is ticked
Port: 587
In the big box is
Gmail listed under Description
smtp.gmail.com under Server Name and
Google or similar under in Use by Account?
There is nothing in the big box

In Mail > SMTP server setup > Advanced...
I expect you will find you also need to:
enter your username,
server: "smtp.gmail.com",
check the use secure sockets layer (SSL) checkbox and
enter your password ... on that pane.

so the stuff in the top part of the box under "Incoming Mail Server" goes in the first part of the mail account preferences pane... but you have that working already, you said, so don't change it if it is working.
The stuff under "Outgoing Mail Server" is what goes on the deeply-nested "Advanced" pane we have been focused on.
