Q: mac mail Yosemite bobbles apostrophe?

This is a small but constant annoyance. After upgrading to Yosemite, Mac Mail does an odd thing with apostrophes. For example, if I type "doesn't" it looks fine until I hit the space bar for the next word. Then some kind of auto-formatting happens. The apostrophe spacing changes, and the space after the word disappears, so the next word is not separated. So I get "doesn'twork" instead of "doesn't work."

Can I just turn off the auto formatting?

On my “MacBookAir” 11'' mid-11 with Yosemite, I encounter this bug with APOSTROPHE in MAIL, ONLY when these TWO conditions are set:

    1) choosing "rich text format"

    2) choosing "correct on send" ("corriger au moment de l'envoi"  in french)

So  i switch the correction mode in "while typing" and... the bug disappeared!

BUT it is a REAL bug. I tried to signale it to APPLE (http://www.apple.com/feedback/), BUT... on that page, in the "OSX apps", the icon of "MAIL" doesn't figure! Funny or sad?

Thanks for finding that incredibly obscure solution.

I had mine set to spell check "never"

And yes, why don't they have an icon for feedback on mail?

I have sent a comment under the OS X icon, where there is an option to select a "mail" category.

Thanks Guy for this solution.  I had mine set to Check on send but my wife's was set on check while typing.  I had the problem - she didn't. So I changed mine and now - problem solved!

How you found this is beyond me.  I thought I was a lateral thinker but you're way ahead of me!

Incidentally if you go onto the feedback page and select System X Yosemite you have an option to choose Mail and go from there.  I posted a bug report on this site.  I agree it's annoying that Mail is not listed separately but Mail has always been a bit odd and has appeared in some really obscure places!!

WOW ... I've struggled with mail since Yosemite was installed. If I typed apostrophe or dot dot dot ....... cursor would jump to next line. For the life of me i couldn't find  solution so I bought Airmail 2 (which I HATE!) but this solution seems to work so THANK YOU!

Thanks guydepernon! Below is my experience. I checked my prefs and found I selected to never check, and still had the problem. Apparently the only workaround at present is to set it to check while typing. I did this and it now works for me. Thanks so much!

Well I’ve narrowed the issue for typing in Mail that moves the cursor one or two characters in reverse when typing. I’d like to know if anyone else has the problem. It’s repeatable for me.

If I type    I’ll     followed by a space the insertion point backs up two characters over the space and the second l  [i.e. lower case L]. It doesn’t delete anything. It just moves the insertion point back two characters.

If I type     I’ve     it does the same thing. As soon as I type the space it moves the insertion point back over the space and between the v and e.

If I type      this’d   (who’d want to type this’d anyway!) it moves back over the space to just after the d as though I didn’t type a space, but the space is still to the right of it.

There seems to be some wierdness going on between the space bar and hyphenated words ONLY IN MAIL.

I’ve tried this in Text Edit, Text Wrangler, and Word. None of these problems show up there.

I’d appreciate it if others could test this. Otherwise I may have to resort to typing like an android with no hyphenated words!

Thanks so much for this post. The mad apostrophes have been driving me insane. I did inform Apple of it a couple of weeks ago. Happy now

Mail Feedback is in the Mail menu in Mail.

    I can't replicate the "bug."

There are several other threads reporting same problem and workaround, though.

    Hi Barney,

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place but in Mail 8.0, Feedback is not under the Mail menu - or any other menu for that matter. Maybe that's why you can't replicate the bug?? The bug I have is easily replicated - even on the machines in the Apple Store. It definitely seems to be linked to the Mail release with Yosemite as I never had the problem under Mavericks (can't remember the version of Mail I had back then).  Still if you are on Mail 8 and Yosemite and don't have the bug consider yourself blessed!

    Regards

    Incidental comment:

It has a problem with commas & quotation marks too?

No, you're not. They've removed it in the Yosemite version.

Just use the OS X feedback. In the feedback form, there is a popup menu for Feedback Area where you can choose Mail.

Hi, I got exactly the same problem after upgrading to Yosemite on my MacAir, but it's even worse in French, because the text you try to type after the space comes exactly one letter after the apostrophe, so it is inside the word.

I've just followed your advice in choosin 'Rich text format" and it works. Thank you.

We are just waiting Apple for the bug correction now
