opening downloaded files

When I download a file then go into file - open download - the file is showing but faintly and I cannot open it. What am I doing wrong? Also when this happens I am unable to close the box with the red button on top but have to use Cancel from the bottom right hand side of file box

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.5), not sure about the 10.5 but is OSx

OK. When you download one of these files what format are they in? Do they come to you as .Zip archives or .dmg disc images, for example?

The "box" to which you are referring is a window. The buttons only have an effect on the window. The Red button closes the window. The Yellow button minimizes the window into the Dock. The Green button maximizes the window. But none of them have any effect on the file you downloaded. You will need to provide more information about what you are actually doing. For example, what causes the window (box) to appear? If you double-click on a downloaded file does that open an application? If not then what does happen?

Have you ever used a computer prior to this? If so, then how did this work on that computer?

I have just lost the reply I was doing!!!!

The window I am speaking about is File - Open File.

I do understand the functions of the three buttons but for some reason only the green one is on when I do this. If I open a file which will open the other two buttons appear.

Some of the files are asf .docx dmg pptx. I am just wondering if these are word files and so wont open in my mac?

I have used computers for some years now but only for day to day things so don't know much about them when anything goes wrong.

I have been using my mac for about a year now without too many problems. I do not use it to a fraction of its potential but changed cos I got fed up with my window laptop crashing.

I am also considering buying Microsoft Office for Mac, partly for compatibility and partly because I am more used to using Word than Pages.

Would you recommend this?

How does saving documents work if I do this? Are they saved the same way as when I save from pages? I was able to do this all ri

ght when using Word.

Also the list which used to appear on the right hand side of anything I had downloaded has gone. Don't ask me where!!! I have tried the help for these things but not with much success.

.docx and .pptx are Office 2011 files - Word and PowerPoint, respectively. A .dmg is a disc image file. It is typically used for distributing software contained in the disc image. A .asf file is a Windows audio file. This file has no connection to OS X.

I always prefer Office to iWork.

Downloads via Safari are saved on the Desktop by default, but can be changed to the Downloads folder, if you prefer.
