Q: Yosemite has no sort by name in Mail App

Yosemite has what I would say is a bug- it is certainly at least a dropped feature.

I'm sure that most people view mail sorted by date as do I.  But sometimes I want to view all mail from a particular sender.  All previous versions of mail allowed you to simply click on any mail in the inbox and then simply click the "sort by name" tab at the top to see all letters sorted by name, beginning with the selected email.  Now in Yosemite, instead of beginning with the selected email, it instead starts at "A" or "Z" ignoring the selected email.  I would suggest that this is helpful to exactly nobody.  I'm hoping this is just a bug/oversight that will be quickly fixed.  "Sort by name" is king of important to those of who are heavy users.

And yes, I understand that I can do a search.  But this brings up every email that even mentions the sender and searching and then sorting is super cumbersome compared to the one click method that has seemingly been abandoned.  Hoping there's a fix in sight!

Good luck with even getting a response to that- I don't believe they take requests.  If it's truly "as designed" I challenge anybody to point out how this could possibly be seen as a better way.  Perhaps I'm missing somebody else's work flow needs but I truly can't fathom how this could possibly be seen as an improvement.  Thanks for fighting the good fight.  Hopefully others will find this discussion and jump on board.

I think the engineering guys have made a mistake but don't want to back down. It is interesting that they told me that the correct way to get the old sort result is to do the sort then tap the up or down arrow but you can get the same result quicker by holding down the command key while clicking on the name column to do the sort. They don't even seem to know about that option.

I can live with the command key option but what about the millions of mail users who will never figure that out and just get mad at Apple every time they need the old feature.

For the record, the command key trick does not work for me.

And only the down key trick works. The up key trick takes me to the sender (name/from) that is alphabetically after the one I try to highlight.

The Command key workaround does not work for me either. Arrow keys seem to work fine.

I still don't understand why the sorting behavior had to change ... the extra keystrokes really "bug" me.

I have found that the command key method only works sometimes so the up or down arrrow is what I now use all the time

I also found the command key method to be intermittent.  Very frustrating!

They fixed it!  I had updates installed last night and this morning the selected email is anchored and the sort is set around it.

Thanks Apple support for hearing the concern and getting it fixed.

Hmmm...Did not fix it for me. Updated yesterday to latest Yosemite.

Can you tell us what actual updates were installed for you?

I updated to 10.10.1 too ... no changes to Mail for me. Sorting is still an issue, unfortunately.

This is really strange... it worked this morning so I posted that it was fixed.  Just tried again and it's not.  I don't get it.  This morning I tried it a bunch of times so I have no explanation.  BTW, not that it really matters at this point, but my update brought me to 10.10.1.

I'm sure you've all figured it out that there is no need to hit the command key and an arrow up or down for the work around.  Just the arrow after the sort gets you back to your selected email.  Actually one above or below depending on which key you hit.

    Sorry for the misinformation.

I've also found the behavior to be erratic.  Sometimes holding command while sorting does the trick, sometimes not.  Very annoying bug.

Easy alternative that works for me:

    - click on the email from the person your want to search for;

    - go to preview pane header below (classic view)

    - click on the down arrow right of the person name

    - select "Search for 'person name'"

Thanks harvestnz - this words perfectly, although I don't understand why they changed it in the first place - it seems like something that was missed in the requirements for the Yosemite update.

Workarounds are nice and pointing them out is appreciated.

But WHY is a work around necessary?  If you are just finding this issue and are annoyed, please send feedback to Apple.
