Why is my mac mini running slow after downloading Yosemite?

My mac mini is running significantly slower after downloading Yosemite and I am wondering if it is to better to try to go back to an older operating system or if Apple is working on a fix for this.

Here is what I am Running it on:

Just what do you mean by slow?

There are two things that would've improved an older computer prior to

an upgrade to a newer OS X, those would primary be to increase the

amount of installed RAM available to the System, and to install a newer

larger capacity hard disk drive. This would help an older system, too.

You could read into topics that may help find out about your Mac

which also could help figure out how it is using resources, and if

the computer could use some hardware upgrade to work better.

•Tech Guides - from The Safe Mac:

http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/

If your model identifier is Mini3.1, that could sustain a RAM upgrade,

according to http://mactracker.ca specification database... also it may

be upgradable to a solid-state-drive, or just a larger capacity HDD.

An Early 2009 or Late 2009 Mac Mini could see some advantage with:

Maximum Memory: 8 GB

Memory Slots: 2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

•Mac mini: How to remove or install memory

There may be other things lurking in your computer, so as to slow the

workings of it; perhaps some application or other content was installed

that could be slowing it down. However Mac OS X does like RAM...

even though Yosemite and Mavericks use may use it more efficiently.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

I just bought a new Mini i7 and it was worse than an XT after updating to Yosemite. Erased and re-imaged and still no luck. Then I erased and re-imaged but skipped logging in with my Apple ID during the setup phase and it's running perfectly. I'm a bit wary of signing in with iCloud yet but I did sign in to iTunes and it is still running fine.

Hope this helps.

I thought I had gotten rid of the HP shortcut manager and can no longer find it but when I re ran my Test it is still there. Were could it be hiding that I can not find it now?

There are a few items among the Login Items, and these (in report) show a path.

Note the words after the item, and that is where one may hope to find these...

HPShortcutManager Application (/Library/Application Support/Hewlett-Packard/HP Scanjet Scanner/HPShortcutManager.app)

HPShortcutManagerStartup Application (/Library/Application Support/Hewlett-Packard/HP Scanjet Scanner/HPShortcutManagerStartup.app)

HP Scheduler Application (/Library/Application Support/Hewlett-Packard/Software Update/HP Scheduler.app)

These three appear to reside in the /Library/Application Support (folder) by the name(s) shown.

Because there is a System/Library and also a User/Library, note carefully where you are if or

when you happen to locate something of a similar name. Some items would only be installed

in a User account Library, others more likely in the System Library, in the hard disk drive.

Also note in the Etresoft/etrecheck reports a tiny letter i appears where you can click on it

in each section of the report. This will take you to a page at Etresoft with info on that area.

From this section (login items) a web page at etresoft with this URL is addressed:

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck_story#loginitems

There are a few other possible suspect items in the report, but I am not sure how they may

apply to the symptoms your system has exhibited; then too is the matter of insufficient RAM.

Hopefully this helps somewhat.

We're going into Standard time here, soon, so that may affect some aspects of ASC posts.

In any event...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
