Time Machine Restore, permissions problem

I just concluded a clean install of of Yosemite 10.1 to my iMac (21.5", late 2009 model, 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 12GB DDR3, 500GB--nearly that much available now), using Time Machine for a full backup before the install. I did not create an image of my hard drive as well. Using Time Machine in an attempt to restore files from several folders I have discovered I do not have permission to view my own folders. Looking through older backups on the T.M. HDD I see my current user name doesn't match the pre-install user name--it's now capitalized where before it was all lower case. I am assuming this to be the problem.

I'm the administrator on this machine. I looked through System Preferences > Users & Groups but only saw how to change a password. I also looked in the SysPrefs > Security & Privacy but didn't find anything useful there. I attempted to create a new user with the "correct" user ID (all lower case) but was prevented because "another already exists", presumably the capitalized user ID.

Q: Is it easier/better to (a) change my user name to match what it has always been--my preference--or (b) change the permissions of the folders I wish to restore from?

Q2: How do I do either?

I cannot restore anything necessary on my iMac.

Suggestions, please.

First make sure you have read & write access to the folder you're trying to restore to. You should be able to see its contents in the Finder, and to move files in and out of it.

This is an exception to the rule that you should never make any changes to backup data. I've tested this procedure in OS X 10.8 only. It should work with later versions, but I don't know whether it works in earlier versions. Use it only for files that were backed up from your home folder, or a folder on another volume created by you, and would normally be writable by you. Do not touch backups of system or application files.

In the Finder (not in the time-travel view), navigate to the backup volume, then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb", and then to the snapshot you want to restore from. The snapshots are folders labeled with the date when they were created. Inside each of those folders is a file hierarchy like the one on the volume that was backed up. Descend through the hierarchy until you come to a folder named "Users," and inside that, a folder with your user name. The procedure will be different if you're trying to restore files on another volume.

Select the folder and open the Info dialog (command-I). Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and authenticate. In the Sharing & Permissions section, give your account Read & Write access. You may have to close the dialog and repeat this step in order for the change to show up. Then click the gear icon and select Apply to Enclosed Items from the popup menu.

Try the restore operation again, in the time-travel interface.

I have read/write permissions on my new user name's folder beneath Macintosh HD, my desktop computer's drive. Before I received your reply I had already tried everything you suggested except closing the dialog and repeating the step. Now all is well!

Thanks.

Q: is it possible to change the username on my upgraded computer without reloading the new OS?

Hello,

I ask for help to access my Time Maschine Backup, please. My Problem seems to be similar to the OP.

The Problem: The UID of my user account on my TM backup is 501, but on my Mac it is 502.

Reason: After mainboard replacement I migrated my user account via a dummy account from my external USB backup disk.

Attempt: Pondini's "Problems after using Migration Assistant"

Details: On step 11 of the white box, I won´t get the prompt about "already being a home folder with the same name" there. But anyway, OS X Yosemite will accept my user folder. But it still has the 502 UID.

Please, what can I do?

Help is very appreciated. Thank you!
