Q: Update frustrations

why does an update of 97 MB require 2.2 GB of space to install? This has required me to delete all of my photos and a bunch of apps in order to install this update. There has got to be a more efficient way of doing this. Otherwise why sell devices with 16 GB of memory if it requires deleting a bunch of stuff in order to update as frequently as Apples pushes out new updates. Disappointed and frustrated!

Furthermore, why does the photo app indicate 2.2 GB when there are no photos stored on the device?  I am assuming that photos displayed on the iCloud streaming are not actually taking up memory on the device.  Assuming this to be correct, does this mean that the photo app itself takes up 2.2 GB of memory? If so, surely the app can be redesigned to take up less memory.

The 97 MB update is compressed. Running the installer decompresses the file. The decompressed file/installer then takes up storage space. Also required is working space for the update itself to function & install the update. The used storage space is then returned to the device after the update process.

A work-around and what many others use (including myself) instead of the over-the-air updates is to update iOS using iTunes via your syncing PC. This method does not use any (if any is used, it's negligible) of your device's on-board storage for the update process.

Mine expanded to 1.1 GB, and I had to open up about 5 or 6 GB of free space. That solved my problem and everything worked okay after that.

And if you have problems with free space, you can use the iTunes program, as it will use your computer space and not your iOS device for space.

As far as the Photos app, no it shouldn't take up that much room. The only think I can suggest is to do a reset to factory default, using your iTunes program which will clean out any garbage files or corrupted files and give you a clean operating system and clean apps. Sometimes things just get "garbaged up" and this is a way to deal with it.

I'll include some links about your backups, and then at the last link, it will tell you how to reset your iOS device to factory default, using iTunes.
