Compress where? On your MacBook Pro Retina, or on your iOS device?

Which software are you downloading to?

The only way to compress a jpeg file is to use an editor that can change the quality level, i.e. jpeg compression, of the image file at the cost of image quality.

Compressing the jpeg file with the system, i.e. Control (right) - click on it and selecting Compress from the contextual menu does not reduce the file size.

If you have the photo in an iPhoto library it can be exported via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option where you can set the Quality level lower so that the file size is reduced.

The size menu in the screenshot is the image size, i.e. it reduces the number of pixels in the image. The JPEG Quality  menu just affects the file size.
