It seems that Apple stores a lot of junk. Is there a good software for cleaning it and speeding it? There are certainly several advertised. more

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

Oct 31, 2014 1:13 AM in response to rver2bby Vishal2014,Cleaning the Mac takes lot of time and after that also, it is very hard to find hidden and duplicate files. So, I have tried Stellar SpeedUp Mac software which give good results. You may try it for free.

Oct 31, 2014 3:02 AM in response to rver2bby VikingOSX,You Mac has gotton dismally slow because you are running too many applications for your available machine RAM and it is swapping to your boot drive. Remove everything from your login items that you could start manually — when you actually need it. Get rid of the McAfee anti-virus software using the vendors uninstall instructions. OS X comes with built-in protection, and running third party anti-virus software constitutes a large number of system slow down and stability complaints here. You are running two browsers simultaneously — probably with multiple tabs open. A memory killer.
Also, once you have done the cleanup above:
- Boot into Recovery (command+R) and use Disk Utility to verify/repair file permissions, and then verify/repair (if necessary) your hard drive. Reboot.
- Boot into Safe Mode
- Press and hold shift key at boot chime. Release when grey horiziontal progress bar appears
- At sign-in dialog
- Once the password is typed, press and hold shift, before clicking the right login arrow. Release the shift key when you have a Finder menubar.
- Reboot normally
See if this combination of administration activities has improved your MacBook performance.

Oct 31, 2014 9:43 AM in response to rver2bby Eric Root,The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

Oct 31, 2014 10:15 AM in response to VikingOSXby rver2b,I am sending this from a different computer. I tried your steps. I uninstalled McAfee. I checked the programs in the dock to make sure they did not start at login. Normally I don't use two browsers simultaneously, but sometimes I have to. I booted into Recovery Mode and verified/repaired the permissions. I did the verify/repair. It needed repair and hung up and said it could not be repaired. And to save as many files as possible and reformat the disk. I do have a 750gb time machine disk connected to the system, but I am not sure how to go about it. I tried to reboot, but it just goes part way through the horizontal bar and the computer shuts down. Now I can't get on the computer. What now? There is also a program that runs when I turn the computer on and I have to shut it down. How can I prevent that program from running. It is not set to run at login.
