Should text messages still come through while I update my iOS?

Last night I updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 8.1. There was some kind of error at the end of the update, and I had to restore my phone to fix it. This whole process might of took around an hour. Today a friend asked me why I ignored their text, and it appears they texted while I was restoring my phone. Shouldn't this text have come through after my phone was restored? Or are any texts that are received during an iOS update or restore lost?
