Hi guys
I'm running two displays with my Mac Pro (2013) - they are set up to mirror each other, as they are in two different areas in a music studio.
Since updating to Yosemite, every time I shut down and subsequently restart, the displays always revert to showing an extended desktop rather than mirroring each other.
Possibly a Yosemite bug, I guess! Any suggestions on anything I could try to resolve the problem?

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.preference.displays2". There may be several such files. Move them all to the Trash.
Log out or restart the computer. Test. If the problem is resolved, empty the Trash and recreate your settings in the Displays preference pane.
Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.

My problem after Yosemite is that the log-in screen not appears on the wrong monitor eventhough when logged in the two screens are correct

In 10.9.5 I run 3 monitors - in yosemite I can only run one!
Any thoughts, other than stick to the older system/

To get the attention your problem deserves, start a new thread instead of camping on this one with an unrelated issue.
Be sure to include what model Mac you are using, and what interfaces you are using to connect your displays.

Thanks for your thoughts on this issue.
I have looked for the displays preference in this folder, but there is not a com.apple.preference.displays2 item in there at all. I have gone into settings, set up my dual monitors again, and then gone back to the prefs folder and it's still not showing up.
So it appears that perhaps the system is not creating this preference file at all!
Do you have any suggestions on what I might do next?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

Strangely this time when I restarted the 30" monitor was off and now it and one of the 2 old apple cinema displays is working - progress of a sort?

i have the same problems a bit: new 5k iMac doesn't remember it's display settings ... i have a second monitor (lcd samsung) connected via the second thunderbolt port with an HDMI adapter that worked fine with mavericks... now every time i rebbot it forgets it's settings...

also: i have had a USB 3.0 hub attached - figured now i can use that ... nada ... had to back to the usb 2.o hub that i have -- the 3.0 doesn't even work at all...
so far yosemite has been a bumby ride for me...
if you can help me you would make me a very happy camper!

Sorry to gatecrash this thread, but I too am running into this issue; My Mac Pro late 2013 running Yosemite doesn't remember the multiple display settings any time I reboot. I have one display connected with a DVI > Thunderbolt adapter, and the other one is connected with the HDMI port.
This may be unrelated, but randomly the 'mouse area', i.e. the cursor of my Wacom tablet, is restricted to only one of the displays... Then after restarting, most of the time I can reach both screens again.
And this too might be unrelated, and with the risk of asking too many questions at the same time and/or sounding like too much of a nitwit; My SSD drive came with most of the folders (if not all of them) with read-only permission. Looking at the info dialog of the startup disk, there's a system administrator, a 'wheel' user, and an 'everyone', see screenshot... I haven't done the installation of the machine myself, but I don't have a clue what this wheel account is for, and if the read / write permissions per user or administrator have anything to do with the issue above?

Given that the problem only started when I updated to Yosemite, do you think perhaps I should just wait for an update to Yosemite which may resolve the issue?

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
