I have a Apple TV 3rd gen, My internet is down at home at the moment, wanted to know if its possible to download the update onto my mac and then jus update it later. via usb or something

The only other way is to use a micro USB to connect the Apple TV to your Mac, you would have to restore the unit. You won't be able to download the firmware directly to your Mac and update later.
Note: Without internet connection you will only be able to use Apple TV for home sharing (this still requires wifi, and iTunes purchases may not stream)
Update the apple TV from your macbook
