This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with...

Since upgrading to Yosemite, at least once per day, I get a pop message informing me of an iCloud issue:

"This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with <my email address>

Open iCloud preferences to fix this problem"

But everything looks and works fine. I use all aspects of iCloud except email (I use a non-Apple email address for iCloud/AppleID/iTunes). Every one of them seems to operate perfectly. I have tried logging out of iCloud & resetting everything. I have tried unchecking and re-checking each element of iCloud. But no matter what I try, I end up getting the message above daily (usually more than once).

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when the message will pop up. There's no pattern like "it does it when I close Safari" or "it does it when I edit a contact". The only pattern that I can come up with is that it seems to happen only when I am using the computer. So if/when I leave it turned on over-night (and I have sleep disabled), the message does not pop up.

I also have an iPhone (running iOS 8.1) and I have no iCloud issues or errors on that device. It's just on my MBP running Yosemite that I see this message.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Yup closing Safari also always gives me that message. For me it always says says theres a problem wt my mail account. What the problem is, I have no idea, since the mail associated wt my account, is set up properly, and iCloud works. I really thought that iCloud would have been fixed in the last update, but it doesn't seem like it was. It'll probably begin to work, only just before the new OS update, and then we'll have a whole new barrage of untested problems to contend wt.

Yes, it seemed to work for me then popped up again! Since then I have done the following and so far, after several days now, it has not reappeared. The issue is clearly with login to iCloud/AppleID. So, I logged out of Messages and also FaceTime which was not accepting my password. Having logged out I shut down my iMac and rebooted in Safe Mode (Hold down the shift key immediately after switch on). Once into safe mode I logged back in to Messages & FaceTime and made sure both were working - they were!

I then restarted the iMac as per normal and Messages and FaceTime are working fine, and so far I have not had the iCloud problem again, and it has been nearly a week.

I have my iCloud email account back again in MAIL for about a week now and it is working and the notices (this mac cannot connect) have stopped. I cannot remember every move I made but I will try and list what I did. I changed my Apple ID and password as the notice that appeared was asking for the password but would not accept my password. I went into Finder and typed in ~/library/application support/icloud/ as suggested in an earlier post. This showed 3 files, one was a 9 figure number which meant nothing to me, another was my iCloud email address and the other was the Apple ID that I had deleted. Instead of dragging this to desktop as was suggested I moved it to trash.I then restarted the Macbook. I then went into MAIL and deleted the iCloud email account that I could not access and then I added a new iCloud email account and checked to see that it was at the Finder address which it was. Looking into Accounts in Mail the new iCloud email account was showing but underneath was the word inactive also the deleted iCloud email account was still showing. I found out that the reason the new email account was not working was because it was not the primary iCloud email account and so I went to the "deleted" email account in Accounts - clicked on it and saw a tab marked sign out. I clicked on this tab and the new account immediately showed in bold and I followed the links for patching it into contacts, mail etc. Having done that I found the new account was showing in Mail. Thats the upside the downside is restarting the unit has brought back problems which I have had from day 1 - emails not deleting from trash, 3 or 4 attempts required, also mail activity showing large numbers of incoming (much more than there is on the computer). I agree with Greenland this is just a never ending cycle of faults as each new OS brings with it more problems, be it Macbook or iPhone. A new OS should be every 3 or 5 years with sensible ongoing TESTED improvements in-between. I for one will not be downloading any new OS released in September which is just a come on for the Christmas frenzy and so is released whether proven or not. Hope this helps someone.

When my Apple ID password was not recognised I thought I would use my iCloud email address (@icloud.com) as my new Apple ID but it was blocked with this message which I made a note of and retained "you cannot use this Apple ID to use an existing Mobile ME email address. If you would like to use your mobile me account you can cancel and sign in using your mobile me account information. The email address you entered is already being used for an Apple account.

If it is yours you can cancel and sign in using that Apple account"

This was gobbeldy gook to me so I just put in a non aligned, different email address for an ID and a completely new password for the ID - it seemed the easiest option. Hope this is of some use. Footnote; yesterday I tried to alter the volume setting in the menu bar and realised it was there but greyed out with the little circle at the top which I could not move. On checking through every thing I could find to do with volume it was telling me "this device has no output control" ??

Today for the first time since setting up a new Apple ID and password I went into iTunes to download a few music tracks. After logging in with my ID and password my name was showing at the top of the page and I proceeded to pick out a track but when I tried to purchase a window opened which showed my Apple ID but was asking for my ID password. It did not matter whether I put my password in or just hit the cancel tab this thing just kept coming back when I tried to purchase and when I clicked on to view my account (even though I am logged in) this window appeared again. This is virtually almost the same problem that caused me to put in a new Apple ID and password - the difference before was I could not log in to iTunes at all as it would not recognise my ID password.

I have done nothing but chase crap like this for the 10 months I have had the piece of electronic crap - I can see the only answer ultimately is going to be wiping Yosemite, Mail, iTunes etc and installing something proven such as Windows 7 Pro. It just beggars belief how Apple can keep churning out this dysfunctional inoperative electronic expensive rubbish and people keep buying it - can you fool all of the people all of the time - I've just about had it.

I have exactly the same problem with Mail. For two days I have not received any mail in my primary account, but have received Mail in three other accounts.

I tried this and the two "Accounts" are very different!

The "new" "Accounts" only has 2 email accounts: one for name@me.com and the other at name@icloud.com plus a single 10digit number in textedit.

the "old" "Accounts" has three more pairs of email accounts for are supposed to be there with extensions me.com and iCloud.com

there are four textedit 10 digit numbers.

Also these three accounts won't open in Mail under the "new" "accounts"

I don't want to use the @iCloud.com accounts as it means more letters to type and easier for other people to remember. Can I get rid of them?

Hi,

this is just to add my voice to this thread:

I have installed OS X 10.10.3 beta and suddenly Mail started with error "Mail can't connect to the iCloud account "iCloud". Enter the password for "***********@icloud.com"

This has appeared only two days ago and after having used 10.10.3 for over a week without problems. When I try to send a feedback report the Beta diagnostic feedback app just crashes.

All other access to iCloud work fine.

Also noticed that my Gmail account was also with a error like above until I changed the password on the gmail account.

Apple: too many changes, too fast with the OS X : produces a lot of problems in other apps .😢

10.10.3 was intended for testing Photos, now Mail has gone wrong instead!

Guess I'll join the ranks of people confused and frustrated by this constant pop-up message that tells us Mail can't connect to iCloud...

I have a Late 2012 iMac 21.5 with a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB memory (DDR3). I too didn't experience any problems until after I installed Yosemite last fall (2014), and the messages became even more frequent after the update at the end of January (2015). On top of the "iMac can't connect..." problem, my iMac started to crash at random times, sometimes within hours after those pesky messages appeared on my desktop. AppleCare advisors tried everything from resetting PRAM and SMC to starting in SAFE MODE then restarting again to...finally advising me to take it in to the nearest Apple Store for a Genius Bar appointment. I did so. They kept it for several days running diagnostics on it and reinstalled Yosemite. Did not make a difference. A senior AppleCare tech advisor was assigned to the case. He tried everything under the sun to correct the issue. Interestingly, he did mention that Disk Utilities was not effective in clearing up issues with Yosemite. My question, so why do we have it? Regardless, I've been documenting the date and time of all the "iMac can't connect..." pop-ups and what I have done afterwards to attempt to remedy the situation. From my very rudimentary research, it does not matter if I have iTunes, Mail, iMessage, and/or Calendar open, or if I had just closed Safari. If I reset PRAM, SMC, start up in SAFE MODE, unplug the iMac and wait 15 seconds then plug it back in...the problem continues. Perhaps it is delayed by 5-7 days, but it continues. I've started opening Activity Monitor and running their diagnostics. Results are sent to Apple. Of course, by doing so, I'm sending all my info to them. But if it will help in the long-run, it will be worth it.

If anyone figures out a permanent fix, let us know!

I found a Yosemite fix. Its something with the Keychain. You can go into Keychain Access, then the Login Keychain (login), then find name@email.com (your Apple ID), Type: application password, then open it. Then click the Show Password box and you will be prompted to enter your password, this is the password to your computer. After doing so it will show a jumbled arrangement of letters and numbers. Delete it and enter your Apple ID password and click Save Changes. You can then go back in through System Preferences, iCloud, and log in. This fixed my issue and fairly easily too after a few hours of trying to figure it out. Hope this helps. 🙂
