Sonos Connect works with my iPhone, but not my iPod Classic

I have recently bought some speakers from the Sonos range, and wanted to play songs from my music library, the majority of which is stored on my iPod Classic, so bought a Sonos Connect. Unfortunately this does not work with my iPod Classic, or my old iPod Nano, but it does however work with my iPhone 4s. I wondered if it could be software issues, but having connected both to iTunes they are both apparently up to date.

Are the headphone jacks on iPods classed as input only?

Thanks.

No.

I'm not that familiar with the Sonos Connect, but since the iPod Classic has no wireless capability, I assume that you are connecting the iPod to the Sonos by taking an audio lead from the headphone outlet to the analaogue input on the back of the Sonos, is that correct? You should have a 3.5mm jack on the end to plug into the Classic and twin phono (RCA ) plugs on the other end, which connect to the Analogue Audio in sockets.

I do not know whether you need to select the audio input on the Sonos, but the volume control on the Classic will control the volume going to the Sonos, so the Classic's volume will need to be turned up.

Yes, I am using a 3.5mm jack/RCA cable. Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately still no joy :-( The Sonos controller lets you know if you haven't got the plugs in the right sockets as the external source won't show up if the RCA plugs are in the output sockets. So according to the controller the iPod is working fine - the equaliser (?!) bars go up and down as if to say that it's all working okay, just no sound. Very confusing!
