iMac Mid-2011 - Mac OS 10.9.2 - Apple Remote

I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac with Mac OS 10.9.2 installed. I have a white plastic Apple Remote.

1. If I go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Advanced and Disable remote control infrared receiver, it does not disable the Apple Remote.

2. If I press Play on the Apple Remote it always opens iTunes, regardless

3. The Up and Down buttons control the system sound volume

4. I cannot stop any of the above activity.

5. I want to use the Apple Remote with VLC Media Player. It used to work with it. I could pause and play videos, fast forward and rewind, and control the VLC audio volume, which is separate from the Mac OS audio volume level.

6. Presently the Apple Remote will not work at all with VLC Player. It will work with iTunes and system volume no problem.

7. Apple Remote also works with XBMC, another media player, but not VLC Media Player.

What to do?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), restore from Time Machine backup
