ipod software 1.21!!!!!

i cant get my ipod software to even install on my computer it downoads and then when the download is complete it jest sits there my ipo settings page on itunes says its downloading the software and will install on its own but even though its finished downloadin it doesnt install i dunno how to update my ipod to 1.21 someone plzz help !!!
