VPN continues to use 3G data connection after I connected to wifi.

Yesterday I think I discovered why my data usage has been so high... I live in China so I use VPN a lot to jump the Great Fire Wall.

This is my behavior and expectations around using VPN.

  1. I start up my VPN connection when I am using 3G network. After established connection the VPN icon appears in the statusbar.
Now I expect all my data traffic to pass thru VPN using 3G. (L2TP to VPN provider Astrill if that matters).
  2. When I enter one of "my wifi-zones" (home or office) my iPhone automatically connects to the wifi. The 3G icon on the statusbar is replaced with the wifi icon, the VPN icon is still in the statusbar. Now I expect all my data traffic to pass thru VPN using my newly established wifi connection. Basically I expect the 3G data to switched off.

But.....

Yesterday when I got home my wife told me the Internet was down again (had some problem lately with our provider). I checked the router and yes the WAN address was set to 0.0.0.0. We did some basic troublefighting as restarting the router and the ADSL modem - and tried again. My wife said nope - no change, wifi connection is ok but no Internet/WAN connection.

After I while I bring out my iPhone to try and notice the wifi symbol indicating wifi and then VPN icon still there. I try to use Safari and I can access Internet content and continue to send/receive Google Hangout messages. Tell my wife Internet is back....she tries as well without success. I check the router, WAN address still 0.0.0.0.

This leads me to suspect that the 3G data connection is not switched off when I connect to wifi (which is my expectations as the 3G icon disappears) - and VPN is not re-established/switched to use wifi. Instead the VPN continues to use 3G data connection without telling me that...

Anyone else experience this?

To me it sounds like a bug...one that costs me money which makes it serious.

I am on iPhone 5, IOS 8.1

I think I have experienced the same issue. When I came back from China last week it turned out that I used 500mb of data in 2 days while normally I use only 70mb per day. Cost me 1600 dollars for 2 days. I was wondering how that could be and then I figured out that the only way could be that the VPN doesn't switch over to wifi but stays on 3G. I haven't found any documentation supporting that this is intended behaviour so it should be a bug. Expensive one.

Thanks for trying to help.

Switch off 3G entirely is not a solution, maybe it can be called a workaround.

As this happens for VPN connection it could just as well happen other kinds of connections, so beware.

I think it is everyone expectations that when the 3G icon is taken down and WIFI icon is shown that all and I mean all traffic goes thru WIFI. This is very annoying and can be a costly BUG for all users.
