Can't connect MacBook to a monitor

I have a MacBook pro 13 inch late 2013, running OS X Yosemite. The monitor I am using is an NEC model aslcd52v-bk. I found an HDMI to VGA converter, and that is what I am using. But whenever I try to use it as a display, my mac just starts blinking on and off every half a second. I have no idea what is going on, and help would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced!
