Jan 10, 2015 12:07 PM in response to Shane Rossby rainair,This is a very interesting discussion. I recently installed Yosemite on my MacBook Pro, then installed Final Cut Pro 7 with Motion 4. Motion does not work. My Mac Pro still has Snow Leopard 10.6.8. A tech-savy editing friend advised me to install Mavericks instead of Yosemite, and was able to give me the Mavericks update. After reading your post on cloning the hard drive before installation, I'm sold on doing that and on my way to buy a hard drive this afternoon.
Can you tell me, how does one clone their hard drive?
Thanks--

Jan 10, 2015 1:23 PM in response to rainairby Meg The Dog,One way to do the clone is to get cloning software such as Carbon Copy Cloner (available on the app store, I believe) and use it to make a clone of your hard drive.
Many consider Carbon Copy Cloner, like the software tools from Digital Rebellion, as essential parts of an editor's toolkit.

Jan 11, 2015 9:55 PM in response to Meg The Dogby rainair,I read a couple of articles that praised Carbon Copy Cloner. One of the articles mentioned using the Apple OS Disc Utility. What's the opinion of using that instead of CCC? Here's the article link:http://www.newertech.com/tech_support/manuals/mac/clon_data.php

Aug 26, 2015 7:01 PM in response to Leslie Cby Paul Shard,I wonder about this interesting SUPPORT document suggesting a way to fun FCP7 including Motion along with FCPX.
Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, Compressor 4: Installation best practices - Apple Support
I was hoping to make this work... but as noted the Motion 4 is disabled so the method seems outdated.

Aug 27, 2015 11:44 AM in response to Paul Shardby Russ H,AFAIK, Yosemite was the first OS update to completely break one of the Final Cut Studio apps (Motion). Actually a little surprised more hasn't broken by now. I don't believe that support doc has been updated since about the time of Mountain Lion.
