I can't enable contacts on my imac

Hello,

I have two issues with my contacts:

  1. I cannot enable contacts in iCloud on my iMac, I can't check the Contacts box, it won't stay checked... Contacts are setup and working on my four iOS devices
  2. Sync of all contacts only works on two of the four iOS devices. All devices are setup identically, including preferences

Any help appreciated

Thanks, Andrew

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

On your Mac, try signing completely out of your iCloud account, then sign back in. Go to System Preferences>iCloud, click Sign Out, choose Delete at all of the prompts (your data will still be in iCloud), restart your Mac, then go back and sign back in (your data will download back to your Mac). Then see if you can check Contacts now.

If you can't see all your contacts on several of your iOS devices, it may be because your contacts don't all belong to the iCloud account. On one of the devices that has all of the contacts on it, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section). What accounts are listed in addition to the iCloud account?

Hi Randers4,

Signed out of iCloud on my Mac and chose the delete option for everything. When I signed back in - same issue. The Contacts check box will not stay checked 😟

You were right about iOS devices, my two had my work exchange account selected as the default account. I have switched my devices to use iCloud as the default account, but my wife's two devices have not updated with everything that is on mine?

Still no luck

Did you restart it before signing back in? If not, try again but restart this time.

The default account setting only determines which account new contacts will be added to by default. If you want your exchange contacts on your other devices, you have two options. The first is to add your exchange account to the devices (Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>Exchange) and turn on contacts syncing with this account.

The second option is to copy the exchange account contacts to the iCloud account. Doing this will allow them to appear on all your devices that are syncing contacts with your iCloud account without having your exchange accounts installed on them, but this will be a static list of contacts, and will not receive any changes in your exchange contacts from your employer (since those changes are only synced to the exchange account). If you want to do this, you can do the following on one of the devices that currently has the exchange contacts on it:

  1. Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (any iCloud contacts will still be in iCloud).
  2. Download the app My Contacts Backup. (If you have more than 500 contacts to transfer from the two exchange accounts you will need the ā€œProā€ version.) Use the app to back up the remaining contacts on your phone (from the other accounts) as a vCard attachment to an email that you send to yourself. Confirm that you have received the email.
  3. Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On.
  4. Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section) and and make sure it is set to iCloud.
  5. Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars…tap each of the exchange accounts and turn off contacts syncing with these accounts (otherwise you will see duplicate contacts on your device, one from iCloud and one from exchange). If the exchange contacts are on a second device, repeat this step on that device too.
  6. Open the My Contacts Backup email and tap the attachment to import the contacts from the exchange accounts back to your device, and to iCloud.
