QuickTime will not play .ogg file despite plug-ins being installed

I have QuickTime Player v. 10.2 on my Mac Mini with Mountain Lion. Someone sent me an email containing the following link, which goes to an '.ogg' recording of a nightingale's song:

If I click on the link, QuickTime opens and a progress bar shows that the file is playing, but there is no sound.

I then downloaded 'XiphQT.component' in order to fix this. For some obscure reason there is no 'Components' folder in my personal library, but there is one in the Mac HD Library, so I installed the plug-in bundle there. This did not solve the problem, so I created a 'Components' folder in my personal library and installed the plug-ins there as well. Still no good.

On the other hand VLC plays the recording from the link perfectly. So this is not a life-or-death problem. But if anyone out there has an explanation and/or solution that will make QT play such recordings, I should be grateful to hear about it.

Quicktime 10 does not use the components you installed, get Quicktime 7 to use them.

I think the components will go into /Library/QuickTime, but that should become apparent when the older version is installed.

Try to use installers where available, since the permissions will be set correctly via them.

Thanks very much, Drew Reece. I've just looked at the link you gave and came up with this:

'OS X includes QuickTime Player (version 10.x) which handles most media playback needs. Only Install QuickTime Player 7 if you work with older media types, have legacy workflows that are not supported by the newer QuickTime Player application, or need to use your QuickTime 7 Pro registration key.'

None of that applies to me, and I have got VLC if I want to listen to that nightingale — or other .ogg files — so I probably won't install QT 7 unless and until lots of older files come my way. But it's useful to know that it is obtainable in case I do need it in the future.

Anyway, I guess there's no support for ogg files through Safari now?

Seems odd Apple would want to have the only browser in the world that can't support the file type.

Is ogg part of any spec for web media?

I though ogg was drafted but never adopted for HTML5?

I'm not sure if earlier standards supported it.
