Q: A keychain cannot be found to store "Safari"

Hi all

I was having problems remembering a password on step-das's Mac Mini running Mac OSX 10.9.5. In any event I was able to reset it by restarting his computer in recovery mode. After doing that though I an having other problems. These include getting the following error "A keychain cannot be found to store Safari." It then gives me the option of "Reset to Defaults" or "Cancel." I just selected cancel.  Others have suggested that I use Keychain First AId to to fix any problems. When verifying I get the following message. "Error: login keycahain not found unable to get info for ~/library/keycahains/login.keycahing, reason: the operation couldn't be completed no such file or directory. Not really sure what to do now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. On a side note I do remember getting message about not being to update the keychain password when reseting his login password. Sorry but I not write down the message I got.

Also his computer keeps making me login every time it is restarted, How do I fix this? i know there is a way to keep him logged every time the computer is restarted or turned on.

And last thing that I think may be related to the keychain problem. Mail keeps asking for password when you click to get new messages. Also acts like it is not connecting to the incoming mail server at our local ISP. I am able to get new mail from this same server.

Thanks for your help or suggestion.

System Preferences/Users & Groups - unlock the padlock, select his account, and click login options. Set up automatic login.

You may need to do a Keychain reset.

I followed the directions provided via the link "Keychain Reset" and get the following message "The specified keychain can be found."

How do I get this keychain back and where did it go?

    Thanks

    Michael

The keychain is encrypted with the login password. If you lose the password, the keychain is gone forever. You can force a password change but you won't ever get the keychain back. Newer machines allow you to save the keychain in iCloud and recover it and other functionality via iCloud. But if you haven't turned those on before, it is too late now.
