recently I uninstalled an app and wanted to reinstall it. When I went to the App Store on my iPhone, that app did not have the 'Free' button which u click to download it, but rather a small button with a picture of acloud on it. What does this mean? I do backup to icloud by the way, in case this is related to icloud.

It did not "replace" the install button. The "cloud" symbol only shows up if you have already previously installed or purchased the app and have deleted it. It is there to tell you that the app is available in case you want to download it again, and you will not get charged again if it was previously purchased. This is different than downloading/purchasing the app for the first time. That's why.

I clicked on it and my apple id password was requested and afterwards the app was downloaded and installed on my iphone. Effectively, it just replaced the normal Install button for apps on the app store; I think the button only comes up if u have previously installed an app but then uninstalled it. (If the app is already on ur phone, it just has an 'Open' button). But why?
It means that the app is available for your use since you have already downloaded it or purchased it. Did you click on the cloud icon? What happend?
