How did you import the CDs to itunes?
do they show in your library?
how are you playing a song? (That would create a duplicate)
i will assume you are on a windows PC. Is the PC and itunes up to date?

iPhoneDo you have an external drive you are using with iTunes?
Go to iTunes prefs > Advanced.
What is the iTunes media folder location?
Do you have Keep iTunes media folder organized checked?
Do you have Copy files to iTune media folder when adding to library checked?

yes i use (WD my passport for mac 2 tb usb 3.0
location is correct
itunes media folder organised is checked
and yes Copy files to iTune media folder when adding to library is checked
. it looks in the right place but just wont see it until i individually locate each song, it asks me to find all files, but always comes back cant find files.
the songs i have found individually will play even after i restart, but eventually at some point it will lose all locations again
i did reboot after this kept happening before. thought it was a mac glitch of sort, i imported all my cds again but same problem

iPhoneExternal needs to be mounted & ready before you launch iTunes.
On the external, do you have an iTunes folder?
(The iTunes media folder location should be inside this folder on the external)
and in this folder you have an iTunes library.itl file?

ok the iTunes library.itl file is not on my external but it is in the itunes folder on my mac under home/music/itunes?
my music is stored in a file on the external drive. all other itunes related files i believe are kept on my mbp file above
is this correct?
